The Constable Jury present Daniel Bramford for reflecting on the Constable Jury and calling them a Pack of forsworn Rogues and abusing them when on their duty upon Oath.

Ordered that Mr Mayor, the Aldermen, Coroners, Chamberlains, 5 Mr Stephen Egginton, Mr Smith, and Mr Poe or any five of them be a Comittee Not only to Revise Mr Hollins's Chamberlains Account but also to view Dr Dodsley's buildings where the Malt Mill stood1, Mr Benjamin Rickard's Stable and Warehouse, Francis Ward's house in Hockley, and Mr Farnworth's Porch. 3498 fo. 7. 1738. Wednesday November 1.

Resolved that George Garton be Allowed 5/- for cleaning the Ditch from Barkergate end to the Ditch near the Gardens by the Nether Glass house and that henceforward he be allowed 8/- a year for cleaning the said Ditch and the same be put amongst the fees and Salleries.

1739. Tuesday June 5.

This day a Lease was Let to George Hall of a Garden at East end of Fishergate his own House West, Pennyfootlane Close East, Butchers Close South, Penny foot Row North, late in occupation of Thomas for 21 years from Lady day last at 30/- a year payable yearly Bridgeland and To be got ready against next Hall day.

Ordered that the Chamberlains do pay Mr Alexander Burden Junior and William Pilkington One hundred pounds towards their Expenses in the Kings Bench at the Prosecution of the Company of Navigators of Derby for a Charge of threatning Some of the Jurymen 25 Summoned to try the late Cause between the said Navigators and this Corporation and for some other Offences Upon their giving a Note to return to the said Chamberlains All Such moneys as Shall be taken off from the Bills of Mr Seagrave and Mr Sharpe for the Use of this Corporation. 3498 fo. 26.

There had been several malt mills in the town. It is impossible to say which this was.

The Free School.-Ordered that Mr Henson the Schoolmaster of the Free School within this Town do pay no Parochiall Assess- 30 ments for the said free School And that he be not hereafter charged in any of the Parish rates for the said School or the dwelling house belonging thereto in his own Occupation.

This is probably the Manor-court of St. John of Jerusalem commonly called 'Shelford St. John's.' See Transactions

A Certificate from Lord Hardwicke dated at the Assizes held at this Town the thirteenth day of August 1736 That Ruth Roberts of the parish of Saint Mary in this Town of Nottingham Widow Apprehended Samuel Higginbotham Convicted then of breaking her 5 house and Stealing thence her goods and money to the Value of Eight and twenty Shillings Whereby She is discharged of all parish and Ward offices in the said parish of Saint Mary by virtue of an Act of Parliament made in the tenth and Eleventh years of the reign of King William the third-And her Assignment thereof to William 10 Thompson of the Same parish Hatter and Hosier Endorsed thereon Was Inrolled in this Court pursuant to the said Statute.

St Peter's Workhouse.—Ordered that the Workhouse of the Parish of St Peter in this Town and County Shall be made a house of Correction And that the Trustees of the said Parish Workhouse 15 or any Two of them for the time being or their Servant do Order and give the poor people that are put therein proper and reasonable Correction if they misbehave themselves or refuse to work and be able so to do. I

Chamberlain retires from office.--This day Mr Samuel Wright came and desired to be Excused from Serving the Office of Chamberlain of this Town to which he was Chose last Michaelmas day To 25 which this Hall Consented And he is Excused Accordingly.

Rent of the Tithes.--Ordered That Mr Poe be abated five pounds 5 a Year in the Rent of the Tythes The same being now to be Charged thirty five pounds a year.1

Rockholes.-Ordered that the Chamberlains do Cause the Tene- 10 ments in the Rockholes in and near the Sandhills beyond the Chappell Barr now in the possessions of John Truman, Stephen Ashby Ball (tenant to Godfrey Whitaker) Samuel Mellar and John Chapman or their Undertenants to be hewen down and Levelled forthwith And that they begin to do the same on Tuesday 15 the 26th day of this Instant February if the said persons shall not before that time have pulled down and taken away the same which they may have leave to do And the said Chamberlains are to give them Notice thereof to morrow to do the same accordingly.

Petition against the destruction of Collieries and Coal Mines.— This day the Common Seal was Affixed to a Petition to the house of Commons for the passing an act for the preventing wilfull and Malicious destruction of Collieries and Coal Mines which is ordered to be sent up to Mr Plumptre to Present if he think proper.

Some Corporations redeemed the tithes and then farmed them out for their own benefit. e.g., Leeds.

bottom of Upper College Street and the top of the hill, on the south side of the road. The rock is still of a very considerable height.

The Spice Chambers.-This day The use of the Spice Chambers Except on Markets and fair days was let to William Parnham to work a Twisting Mill in for twenty shillings a Year to Enter at Lady day next. 3499 fo. 20.

1740. Wednesday April 2.

5 Dr. Deering.-Resolved that Mr Alderman William Trigge, Alderman Newton, the two Coroners, Mr Stephen Egginton Mr Fellowes and as many more of the Hall as will Attend be a Comittee to Attend the Hall whilest Doctor Deering1 Inspects Some writings and Records of this Corporation in the Repository And also to 10 View the Ditch at the bottom of Drury Hill in order to have the Same Cleaned. 3499 fo. 21.

1740. Tuesday June 3.

Chainy Bridges.-Whereas Some Trees in the Coppice have been fell'd for the Repairing the Cheney bridges which are become ruinous and in a bad Condition It is Ordered that the Bridge 15 Masters Repair the said Bridges and Set them in good Repair in as frugall a Manner as they can.

The Swine fair.-Resolved that it is the Opinion of this Hall that the Ground between the two Cart Roads leading up to the Ashtree is a more proper place for the Swine fair2 held at Goose fair than 20 where it is Kept at present therefore Mr Mayor is desired to Order the Swine fair to be henceforth kept at the place aforesaid.

1740. Tuesday July 15.

Ordered that the Chamberlains do pay Samuel Wheatcraft Six pounds towards the paving of that part of Stoney Street near 25 the South East end of Mr Plumptre's house if he pave the Same to Satisfaction.

Ordered that the above Comittee Mr Mayor, the Aldermen The Coroners, Chamberlains and as many of the Hall as will attend also view Benjamin Bowley's shop and a piece of ground near the 30 Leen Side desired by Mr Lupton for a place to Clear Buckskins in.

Here and on several later occasions Dr. Deering is evidently seeking for matter to include in his History.
