Non-attendance at the Hall Meetings.-Ordered That Mr Jacob Tibson shew Cause to this Corporation Next Hall day why he shall not then be removed from his Office of a Comon Councellman of this Corporation for Neglecting his Attendance for Severall Hall days 5 within the two Years last past and that he have a Copy of this order given him.

Rebuilding the New Shambles.-Ordered That the Walls of the Room building over the Shambles be made a Brick and an half to the Top and that the workmen be paid according to measure at the 10 Usuall Rate And that the Comittee already Appointed for the said Building may agree with the workmen to alter the Wood work of the Butchers Shops for which they now ask Seven pounds.

Tolls. Ordered That Mr Wyld and Mr Finch the present 15 Sherriffes shall pursuant to their bond given last Michaelmas pay out of the Profitts of their Office fifteen pounds to Mr Richard Smith towards the payment of his Bill of Law Charges for Prosecuting Mr Francis Ward and Mr Hayne in the Court of Exchequer for non payment of their Tolls for Goods Navigated on the River Trent 20 through the Manour of this Corporation.

1734. Tuesday September 17.

This day the house at the Trent bridges in the possession of John Lawrence being the Sign of the Golden Lyon with the small osier holt below it was Lett to the said John Lawrence for a year from Michaelmas next at the Rent of £7 payable half yearly as Usuall 25 and he is to Continue possession of the Wharf house Wharf and Warehouses belonging to it late Mr Wards for the use of this Corporation till Christmas next and to pay for it till then after the rate of 10/- a year And then the said John Lawrence doth agree to deliver possession thereof to this Corporation 1/- being paid in Earnest 30 by himself. This day Mr James Sloss1 a Dissenting Minister (who took the Oaths and declared his approbation of the Articles of Religion 10 at the Originall of this Sessions) Made and Subscribed the Declaration against Transubstantiation Appointed by the Statute made in the thirtith year of the Reign of King Charles the Second Intitled "An Act for the more effectual preserving the Kings Person and Government by disabling Papists from Sitting in either 15 house of Parliament "

John Bird Indicted for a Misdemeanor in Carrying in and about this Town of Nottingham an Effigy in Representation of a person of honour in a Starr and Garter and with an intent to burn the Same And in Endeavouring to raise a riotous and tumultuous Assembly 20 in the said Town to which he Submitted and pleaded Guilty And it is ordered that Judgment against him be Stayed till the next generall quarter Sessions of the peace to be held for this Town and he was discharged out of Custody on his Mother's giving Security for his Appearance then to receive Judgment.3 35I. 25

1734. August 5.

Hawking of meat to be suppressed.-Upon Complaint of the Butchers trading in this Town of Nottingham The Court having taken into Examination the Custom and Practice of Hawking

Mr. James Sloss was ordained minister of the Castle Gate Chapel, 1 August, 1733.
He was a Scotchman and an M.A. of Glasgow University.

This was an adjourned meeting.

3 He was fined 1/- on 1 July, 1734.

Fleshmeat and finding it to be a growing Nusance within this Town of Nottingham Have determined to give their Assistance to prohibit and Suppress it. And for this End Doth Order That from and after the twenty nineth day of September 1734 No Butcher 5 Journeyman Apprentice or Servant to any Butcher or any other person or persons whatsoever Shall hawk or carry about the Streets. or other places within the limits of the said Town and County of the Town of Nottingham any Sort of Flesh meat or Meat Usually Sold by Butchers Exposing or Offering the Same to Sale. Nor Shall Sell 10 or cause to be Sold any Such Sort of meat whether the Same be good or bad in any private house or other place or places whatsoever within the limits of the Town and County of the Town of Nottingham Other than in the publick Shambles or places set apart for that purpose by the Clerk of the Market for the time being 15 Or in the known Slaughter house of the Butcher or Butchers to whom the Flesh meat doth justly and of right belong. Upon pain that Every person or persons So offending in all or any of the premises Shall be Prosecuted for the penalty or forfeiture of Twenty Shillings for every offence and with the Utmost Severity And the said Court 20 doth require and Command all Constables in their Severall districts within the said Town That they be vigilant and carefull from time to time to Present all Persons who shall offend in any of the premises aforesaid and to the End no one may pretend to be ignorant of this order The said Court doth further order That this their Resolution 25 be publickly notifyed by the Common Bellman and that Copies hereof be fixed up in the Open places of Note and of publick resort in and about the said Town.

1734. Thursday October 24.

The Butchers' Stint.-Ordered That the Butchers do keep their usuall Stint in the fields And that they shall henceforward Brand 5 them with their own respective Brands at the time of Breaking the Same.

It appearing to this Hall that the late Sherriffes Mr Wyld and Mr Finch had paid £5 towards Law Charges against Mr Ward and others before the time of their Shrevalty and that the Profitts of 10 their office are much decreased. It is Ordered that They shall only pay Mr Smith Ten pounds towards his Bill of Law Charges notwithstanding the former order in satisfaction for that part of their Bond. 3494 fo. 8.

1734. Wednesday November 27. Ordered that Mr Chadwicke Mr Abson and Mr Story have leave 15 to put up Stoops and Rails before their Houses in Castle gate extending out into the Street as far as Mr Bennetts And that Mr Kirkby have leave to make Pallisadoes before his house about a foot from the same Ranging even with the Corner of the two adjoining houses. Provided Each of them pay Six pence a year as 20 an acknowledgment. 3494 fo. 9.

1734. Friday December 13.

This day Mr Samuel Wright and Ichabod Wright took of this Corporation for three years from the Twenty fifth Instant The House warehouse and wharf at the Trent Bridges and the House outhouses and little osier Holt below it in the Occupation of John Lawrence 25 and lately Leased to Francis Ward by Lease now expired at the Rent of Thirty five pounds a year Mr Wright to Receive John Lawrence's Rent except the quarter's due at Christmas next. The Corporation to Set it into good repair and Mr Wrights to keep and leave it in good repair.

1734-35. Tuesday January 14.

Tolls. Whereas Samuel Shepperson of Derby hath Commenced a Suit against Thomas Jackson and Samuel Taylor for their Seizure of some Deal Boards out of a Vessell Navigating up the River Trent Thro' the Manour and Liberties of this Corporation Made by 5 reason of the Boat Master's refusall of paying the Usuall Toll of 2d. per Tun for the Goods So Navigated. And such seizure being made by the direction of this Corporation for the Upholding their Right to the said Toll It is therefore Ordered That Mr Smith the Town-Clerk do Appear for the said Defendants in the said Suit And 10 that the Defence thereof and the Expences of the same be Carried on and be paid by this Corporation And that the said Mr Smith do Retain and Employ Mr Abney Mr, Athorpe Mr Noel and Mr Makepeace (or as many of them as he can Engage) to be Councell for defending and advising about the said Suit.

Ordered that Jonathan Newham have a bit of ground of a yard square in the Shambles Lane adjoyning to his house for a necessary house at the Additional Rent of 1/- Added to a Lease granted him lately.

Lease of the tithes of Hay.-This day The Tythes of Hay in the 20 fields and Meadows was Lett to Mr John Poe for a Year from Lady day last at the Rent of forty pounds payable one half at Michaelmas next and the other half at Lady day next Mr Poe to deliver to the Hall a true Copy of his book he shall Collect by And to Accept of the Usuall Composition for the Tyth from all Such as shall 25 require it to wit 2/- an acre in the Clayfield 1/8 in the Sandfield Mr Alderman Langford being pleased to Engage for the payment of the said Rent. 3494 fo. 17.

Inspection of the Charters, etc.-Ordered That Mr Mayor or his Deputy and as many of the Hall as will attend be Summoned and 30 meet at the Hall some day this week To consist of five Members at least to Inspect into our Charters and writings and Examine witnesses in order to our defence in the Suit Comenced by Mr Shepperson. 3494 fo. 18.
