Probably 'Widow Blee' who received 13s. 4d. in the previous list of fees and salaries.

2 Frequent references to chains occur in the Records. The safety of the streets at night was difficult to secure so long as those who endangered the peace could

pass easily from end to end of the town at will. These chains were stretched across the streets at night with the view of making it more difficult to move about rapidly.

3 The preamble quoted under date,

in the pound on all houses and Sixpence in the pound upon all lands within the parish of St Mary in this Town of Nottingham for the repairing and amending the Highways within the same parish be Ratified Allowed and Confirmed And that the moneys therein. 5 Charged shall be Leveyed by distress and Sale of the goods of all the persons therein assessed who have refused to pay the Same Rendring the Overplus of the value of the goods so distrained to the Owners thereof (the necessary charges of making and selling Such distress being first deducted.)

Lease of Everton Toll sealed.-This day the Corporation Seal was affixed to George Bingley's Lease Everton Toll after his name was 5 alter'd from John to George and both Counterparts put into the Proper Repository

Cleansing the streets.-This day Edward Collishaw and William Foulds agreed to Clean all the Streets Markett places and All other places in this Town which Thomas Smith lately did and agreed to do 10 and also the Chappell Barr and Carry away the Dirt from time to time in a punctuall manner till Michaelmas next In Consideration of Twenty five pounds which is hereby ordered to be paid to them quarterly by the Chamberlains for the same 3493 fo. 4.

The Fire Engines.-Ordered that the Trustees appointed to buy 15 and take Care of Engines to Quench Fires shall have Leave to fence and Cover the New Cross near St Peters Church and have the Use of it to put their Engines in if they think fitt to be at the Charge thereof so long as they please for that Use. 3493 fo. 4a.

1733. Wednesday December 5.

Sir Thomas White's Charity.-This day the Common Seal was 20 Affixed to a Bond of £900 penalty to the Corporation of Coventry to Imploy and bestow £459-3-3 lately received of them of Sir Thomas White's Charity according to Indentures of Covenants and the order or Decree of Chancery Concerning the Same.

3493 fo. 6. 25 Opposition to a Turnpike.-Ordered That Mr Smith the Town Clerk Wait on Francis Lewis Esquire to Inquire about the Intended Bill to be brought into Parliament for Repairing the Roads from Loughborough to this Town and to acquaint him that this Corporation will oppose Such Bill if a Turnpike be placed nearer this Town 39 than Bunny in the County of Nottingham.

Lease of Everton and Mattersey Toll.-Ordered that George Bingley may Surrender his Lease of Everton and Mattersey Toll and that another Lease thereof be made to William Wilkinson of Littleborough Yeoman for the same time and upon the same Terms 5 as Bingley's were.1

Paving Swinegreen.-Ordered That Mr Mayor do agree with 10 Charles Wheatcraft for the Paving the Swinegreen upon as good Terms as he can.

Ordered That Henry Ward of the age of one Hundred and six years the Eldest son of a Burgess of this Corporation be now made a Burgess of this Corporation Gratis and he was accordingly Admitted. 15 and sworn a Burgess. 3493 fo. 9a.

1734. Monday March 25.

Address to the King.-Resolv'd that an humble Address be presented to his Majesty by this Corporation in Conjunction with the Gentlemen, Clergy and Principall Inhabitants of this Town to Congratulate his Majesty on the happy Nuptialls of the Princess 20 Royall with the Prince of Orange and that the Seal of this Corporation be delivered to Mr Mayor to fix it to the said Address this afternoon And it is ordered that Mr Mayor Mr Alderman Green, Mr Alderman Burden Mr Alderman William Trigge Mr Alderman Huthwaite and as many of the Hall as will attend to Consist of five 25 at least be a Comittee to fix the Seal to the said Address and that the Same be Sent to Mr Plumptre to desire his Grace the Duke of Newcastle to deliver it to his Majesty. 3493 fo. II. Disfranchisement of a Burgess.-The Question being put whether Robert White a Burgess of this Corporation who was Convicted at 30 the last Assizes for feloniously stealing a Promissory Note shall be

Now Disfranchized from being a Burgess And it was Carried in the affirmative by the Majority of votes And he the said Robert White is hereby Disfranchized accordingly. 3493 fo. II.

Rebuilding the New Shambles.-Ordered that Mr Mayor and the Aldermen and as many of the Hall as will Attend Mr Mayor's 5 summons (to Consist of five at least) be a Comittee to treat with proper Workmen to take off the Roof from the New Shambles and the Walls thereof being in danger of falling And to rebuild the Same in such manner and at such price as the said Comittee shall think proper and can Agree upon-it requiring immediate care.

Coventry Money.-Ordered that from henceforth no Person shall be Accepted as a Security for fifty pounds of Coventry money who at the time being is bound for the payment of any other such sum of the same Charity money. 3493 fo. 14. 15

1734. Tuesday June 25.

Rebuilding the New Shambles.-The Question being put whether a Room shall be built over the Shambles now in Rebuilding of ten. foot high or only a false floor over the same It passed in the affirmative that a Room shall be built.

And it is ordered That Mr Mayor. Mr Alderman Green, Mr Alder- 20 man Bilbie, Mr Alderman Huthwaite, the two Coroners, Mr Dodsley, Mr Charnells and as many more as will attend (to Consist of five at least) be a Comittee to Bargain and agree with Such proper Workmen as they shall think fitt to Rebuild the said Shambles and the Room and Roof over it in the best manner they can. 3493 fo. 15. 25

1734. Friday July 5.

Rebuilding the New Shambles.-This day the Bargain made by the Comittee appointed last Hall day with Thomas Wesson and Samuel Barnes for Rebuilding the New Shambles and making a Room over them fourteen foot high with a false floor over it and Roofing the same in such manner as is agreed on and specify'd in 30 a paper writing by them given in for the Sum of one hundred and Sixty pounds and five pounds more to be left to the judgment and Order of this Corporation was Confirmed. 3493 fo. 16.
