1724. Monday December 7.

Memorandum That Marmaduke Pennell Esq. Mayor and Lord of the Mannor of this Town of Nottingham by an Instrument in writing under his hand and Seal of his Office bearing date this instant seventh day December 1724 Hath constituted Joseph Burton 5 of this Town of Nottingham Baker his true lawfull and Sole Game Keeper of his said Mannor of the Town of Nottingham aforesaid with power to kill and take Game within his said Mannor and the precincts thereof for the Sole use and imediate benefit of him the said Marmaduke Pennell during his Will and pleasure.

Nomination of Sheriffs and Chamberlains by the Mayor.Memorandum quod Ricardus Bearn Armiger statim post eleccionem suam in Majoratam Villa Nottingham predictæ ut prefertur nominavit Johannem Morley et Willelmum Bilbie Juniorem fore vicecomites et Jonathanem Truman Juniorem et Henricum Butler generosos 5 fore Camerarios Villa et comitis Villa Nottingham pro anno proximo sequente.1

Recommendation for a pension. This day the Common Seal of this Corporacion was affixed to a Recomendacion of Mr John Sweetaple to his Majesty to bestow some place or pencion on him 3485 fo. 4.

Supply of Gravel.-Ordered That the Mayor and Aldermen or 20 such of them as can with convenience to themselves do wait upon

Sir Gervase Clifton and Sir Robert Clifton about getting of Gravell in the River Trent and Mr Smith is desired to go along with them. 3485 fo. 5.

1725-6. Thursday January 27.

Repairs of Trent Bridge.-Ordered that an Adversement of Sir 5 Thomas Parkyns's present of £10 to this Corporacion towards the Repairs of the Trent Bridge damaged by the late flood be put into the Nottingham Newspaper.1

Resolved That the Arches of the Trent Bridge broken down and damaged by the late Flood be Forthwith repaired at the Charge of 10 this Corporacion And Mr Alderman Pennell is desired to assist the Bridgmasters in making such Reparacions who are hereby directed. to Follow his direccions in doing the same And that this Corporacion will gratify Mr Alderman Pennell for his trouble in this affair

Haulage of Boats on the Trent by horses.-This day the Common Seal of this Corporacion was affixed to three petitions one to the Duke of Kingston another to the Duke of Newcastle and another to the Duke of Rutland to desire their assistance in procuring an Act of Parliament to hale Boats and Vessells up the River Trent 20 with horses 3485 fo. 7.

1725-6. Thursday March 10.

New Lease for St. Mary's Workhouse.-Ordered by the Consent of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the parish of St. Mary That the Lease made lately to them of a piece of Ground whereon poor houses have lately been erected by the said parish 25 shall be vacated and cancelled and a New Lease thereof together with another piece of Ground adjoyning thereto whereon a work house for imploying the poor of the said parish is intended to be erected shall be made the said Churchwardens and Overseers and their Successors for the term of 999 years from Michelmas last at 30 the yearly rent of 1/- according to a draught now read in the hall. 3485 fo. 7a.

Both Bailey (Annals of Nottinghamshire) and the compiler of the Nottingham Date Book are wrong in stating that the Corporation made a grant of £10 to Sir

Thomas Parkyns. The above passage

leaves no doubt that the reverse was the

case.

Appointment of a Recorder.-Resolved that a Request be made. to his Grace the Duke of Newcastle that he would be pleased to accept of the Recordership of this Town in the Room of his Grace the Duke of Kingston lately deceased. 3485 fo. 7a. Ordered that a house, formerly a Toll House at the Bottom of 5 Barker gate be viewed in order to be disposed of as this Corporacion shall think fit.

New Lease for St. Mary's Workhouse sealed.-This day all the three parts of an Indenture of Lease tripartite bearing date the 11th day of September 1723 made between this Corporacion of the 10 first part Gilbert Beresford and Beaumont Topott Churchwardens of the parish of St Mary in this Town and Henry Butler and Samuel Fellows Overseers of the poor of the same parish of the second parties and Marmaduke Pennell Gentleman one of the Aldermen of this Town of the third part for the term of 999 years from the 24th day 15 of June then last past of a certain piece or parcell of Ground near the Clay field Pinfold in the said town of Nottingham for building houses thereon for the habitacion of the poor of the said parish were by the consent of the parties concerned vacated and cancelled. And the Common Seal of this Corporacion was this day affixed to a 20 new Lease to Richard Mayes and William Thorpe Gentlemen Church Wardens and John Wright and William Edwards Overseers of the poor of the said parish of the same piece or parcell of ground (whereon the Parishioners of the said parish have already built house for the habitacion of the poor of the said parish) and also of 25 another piece of ground adjoyning whereon a Workhouse for imploying the poor of the said parish is intended to be erected for 999 years from Michaelmas last at the yearly rent of 1/- and the said Richard Mayes William Thorpe, John Wright and William Edwards then executed a Counterpart. 3485 fo. 8a. 30

Election of Recorder. This day the most Noble Thomas Duke of Newcastle was unanimously elected and Chosen Recorder of this Town of Nottingham in the place and Stead of the most Noble Evelyn Duke of Kingston lately deceased. 3485 fo. 9.

1726. Tuesday April 5.

The New Hall.-Resolved that the large Room in the New build- 35 ings at the Shambles End be fitted up and made use of for an Hall

wherein to manage and transact the business of this Corporacion And that Mr Alderman Pennell who hath the inspecion of the said Building do take care to get the same done with what expedicion he 3485 fo. 10.

1726. Friday April 22.

5 St Peter's Workhouse.-Resolved that a piece of ground in the broad Marsh be let to the parish of St Peter whereon to build House for the poor of that parish and a work house for 999 years at the yearly rent of 1/- In the same manner as a piece of ground hath lately been granted to the parish of St Mary. The same to to be set out by the Mayor and the rest of the Members of Hall or any Six of them whereof the Mayor and two of the Aldermen to be three.

Labray's Hospital.—This day a piece of ground without Chappell Barr next above John Truman Senior his house was granted to 15 Thomas Smith Esq. to build an Hospitall upon for poor Stockiners pursuant to the will of Jonathan Labray deceased.1 3485 fo. Ioa.

1726. Monday May 9.

Clock for the New Hall.-Resolved that James Woolley Clockmaker shall be imployed to make a Clock to be set up in the New Hall at the Shambles End and that Mr Mayor do make such agree20 ment with him as he shall think fit. The said Woolley having proposed to give some part of the said Clock to this Corporacion. 3485 fo. IIa. Ordered that the Dyall plate of the said New Clock be covered with Lead. 3485 fo. IIa.

'Jonathan Labray, by his Will, bearing date 25th January, 1718, after the devise of a house near St. Peter's Churchyard, for the benefit of the Charity-school of Nottingham, devised all his houses and lands in Calverton in the county of Nottingham, and all other his lands, not otherwise disposed of by his will, to Thomas Smith, of Nottingham, and his heirs; and he also gave all his personal estate to the said Thomas Smith, his executors, &c., on trust, to sell the said houses, lands, and personal estate, and to apply the money raised by such sale, and

his money, and the debts owing to him, first for the discharge of his debts and funeral expenses, and the remainder either as an augmentation to the Charity school of Nottingham, or for some other pious and charitable use, at the discretion of the said Thomas Smith, whom he made his sole executor, and in such manner as he should appoint.'
