Cleansing of Birch lane.-It is ordered by this Hall that Birch lane leading Southward from St Peter's Church be Swept and cleansed as other streets are to be swept and cleansed.

Sir Thomas White's Charity.-This day the Common Seal of this 5 Corporacion was affixed to a Letter of Attorney impowering Mr John Maxwell to receive £459 - 2 - 10. for the Dividend of this Corporacion of Sir Thomas White's Charity due at Lady day 1723. 3484 fo. 8a.

The Waits.-Ordered that the Waites shall be allowed each forty 10 shillings a year and a laced Hat and when they shall want Cloaks this Corporacion will consider thereof and likewise of their wages. 3484 fo. 8a.

Grant to sufferers from fire.-This day 40/- was taken out of the Common purse. And it is hereby order'd that the Chamberlains 15 do add to it £3 Which they are ordered to give to the Sufferers by fire at Woburne in the County of Bedford.

Removal of the Sheep Market.—The question being put if the Sheep Market shall be removed from the Great Market place to St Peters Church Yard Side It passed in the affirmative by the Majority of 20 votes. It is therefore ordered that the Sheep Market shall be removed accordingly 3484 fo. 9a.

1724-5. Friday February 12.

Grant of a piece of land.-Ordered that a piece of ground at the west end of the Broad Marsh adjoyning to the White Lead house1 containing 20 yards in lenghth from East to west and 5 yards in 25 Breadth from North to South be granted to Thomas Smith Esq. to be added to the Fryers there now Setled for maintaining of his Hospitall. 3484 fo. The late Mr. J. T. Godfrey stated, I know not on what authority, that the first manufactory of white lead in England was established by Mr. Gawthern on the site of the dissolved Franciscan friary in Broad Marsh.-(EDITOR).

Payment for an encroachment.-Ordered that James Hornbuckle do pay 6d per annum for an Incroachment of a Brick a breadth at Wheelergate end being a Coblers Bulk And that the same be put into the Chamberlains book. 3484 fo. II.

1724-5. Tuesday March 16.

Grant of a piece of land sealed.-This day also the Common Seal of this Corporacion was affixed to a Lease and Release of a piece of ground at the West end of Broad Marsh adjoyning to the White Lead house being in length 58 foot and 15 foot in breadth in consideration of £10 Being an absolute conveyance to Thomas Smith 10 Esq In trust for Abel Collin's Hospitall.

Resolved that Conways house and the office Chamber shall be rebuilt at the Charge of this Corporacion and also the ground from that house to the Flaming Sword shall be build upon in Such manner as Mr Mayor and the rest of the Hall shall think fit who are to 15 be a Comittee for this purpose And they are required to take Such measures for building upon the said grounds as may be effectuall for promoting the Work with all convenient Speed and they are to apply to the Hall from time to time for further orders and directions in this affair And it is further ordered That Mr Mayor 20 and any five of the Hall shall constitute a Comittee for this business 3484 fo. 12.

1724-5. Friday March 19.

The New Hall.-The Comittee appointed at the last hall to consider of measures to be taken for building at the Shambles end report That they think it will be necessary that a Surveyor or 25 Surveyors be appointed for building as aforesaid And that a convenient number of Timber trees be cut down in the Coppice for that purpose And that such Surveyor or Surveyors should be ordered to provide materials and workmen for carrying on the work at the Charge of this Corporacion. It is now ordered by this Hall that 30 Marmaduke Pennell Esq. the present Mayor shall be and he is hereby appointed Surveyor of the building who is desired to provide materials and workmen for carrying on the same at the Charge of this Corporacion And that so many trees shall be cut down in the Coppices as shall be necessary for the said Building And Mr Mayor 35 is further desired to prepare a plan of the said Building and present it to the Hall with what speed he can. 3484 fo. 13.

1725. Wednesday April 14.

Dispute as to the landing of goods at Trent Bridge.-Whereas Complaint hath been made to this Hall by Mr John Rickards That a Boat with his mothers goods in it is lately arrived at the Trent Bridge And that Mr Ward the wharfinger there refuses to let him land the said goods at this Corporation's Wharfe as he ought 5 to do by the tenour of his Lease upon payment of his dues It is therefore ordered by this Hall that a Message be sent to the said Mr Ward to require him to suffer the said Mr Rickards to land the said goods or to shew Cause imediately to this Hall why he so refuses And that Mr Chamberlain Smith do carry the said Message 10 Who being returned reporteth to this Hall That the said Mr Ward refuseth either to suffer ye said goods to be landed or shew any cause why he refuses. And having placed two or three Boats next the shore of the Wharfe which he will not remove and threatens any that shall either remove the said Boats or carry ye said goods over 15 them. And unless they be removed or the said goods be permitted to be carryed over the said Boats The goods of the said Mrs Rickards cannot be landed. It is therefore ordered by this Hall that the said Mr Rickards do remove or cause the said Mr Ward's boats or two or one of them to be removed so as the said goods may be con- 20 veniently landed And that the Corporacion will justify the doing thereof. 3484 fo. 14a.

1725. Wednesday May 26.

The New Hall.-Ordered that Mr Mayor do draw out of Mr Smith's hands the Sume of One hundred twenty six pounds part of this Corporacion's money in his hands towards the buildings to 25 be erected at the Shambles end as Mr Mayor shall think fit.

The Malt Cross.-Ordered that Mr Alderman Trigge be desired to give an account to the Hall what money he collected on account for building the Malt Cross And how the Sixteen pounds he hath 30 Charged towards the building the same was expended and also to shew cause why he should not pay interest for the money of this Corporacion which he had in his hands for the time he had it in his hands.

1725. Friday August 6.

The Paving of the new Sheep Market.-Resolved that this Corporation will pave round the Rowell at Hungate end in the New Sheep Markett. 3484 fo. 19a.

The Free School. Whereas divers orders were made at an Hall 5 the 26th day of June 1723 relating to the Free School of this Town. Now upon the complaint of Mr John Henson Usher of the said School This Hall doth think fit to alter the said orders in the particulars following vizt, as to the first Article of the said Orders This Hall doth think fit and so order That the Master shall not correct the 10 Boys under the Ushers Care when the Usher is in the School; as to the third Article That the Master when he takes Boys from the lower Side shall take a whole form together and shall not pick and chuse what Boys to take; as to the Sixth Article That the Usher shall have the Whole Entrance money of Burgesses Sons free of the 15 said School who are admitted of the same and come under his imediate care and tuition. 3484 fo. 20a.

The Free School library.—It is ordered by this hall That the library of Books belonging to the Free School of this Town shall be kept in the Schoolhouse for the Use of the Master, Usher and Schollars 20 of the said School And that a Catalogue of the said Books shall forthwith be made and one Copy thereof delivered to this Corporacion and another to the Schoolwardens. 3484 fo. 20a.

1725. Monday September 13.

The Scavenger's Fee.-This day the Scavenger fee was let to Mr Gervas Pilkington for eleven years from the expiracion of the 25 former lease at the yearly rent of £52 Is. paid in earnest by himself And one strike of Wheat yearly to the Mayor for the time being 3484 fo. 23a.

1725. Friday September 24.

St Mary's Workhouse.—Resolved that a piece of ground near the poorhouse near the Clayfield pinfold be granted to the parish of 30 St Mary for building a Workhouse upon So as thereby the road be not Stratned or annoyed at the yearly rent of Is for 999 years.

This day in open Court between the hours of nine and twelve in the forenoon Marmaduke Pennell Esq. Mayor of the Town of Nottingham Samuel Harris and John Poe Gentlemen Sheriffes of the said Town and County of the same and John Bury Junior Gentleman severally brought into this Court Certificates of their 15 having received the Sacrament of the Lords Supper according to the usage of the Church of England and made due proof thereof according to law by affidavit of two witnesses in writing filed in this Court And afterwards respectively took and Subscribed the Oaths appointed to be taken in and by an Act of Parliament made in 20 the first year of the reign of his present Majesty King George Intituled "An Act for the further Security of his Majesties person and government and the Succession of the Crown in the heirs of the late Princess Sophia being protestants and for extinguishing the hopes of the pretended Prince of Wales and his open and Secret 25 Abettors." And did then also make repeat and Subscribe the Declaration against Transubstantiation mencioned in the Statute made in the twenty fifth year of the reign of King Charles the second and Intituled "An Act for preventing dangers which may happen from Popish Recusants."
