[A minus sign (-) denotes decrease.] TABLE 82.-HAY-ACREAGE AND PRODUCTION, BY DIVISIONS AND STATES: 1879 TO 1919. 1 The figures for 1889 include small quantities of coarse forage crops. North Dakota and South Dakota admitted as states in 1889. Figures for 1879 obtained by consolidating data for the counties which then occupied the areas now known as North and South Dakota, respectively. * Figures for 1899 include Indian Territory; those for 1889 are for Oklahoma Territory alone, no data being available for Indian Territory. PRODUCTION OF POTATOES, 20 LEADING STATES: 1919 AND 1909. VEGETABLES. Potatoes. The acreage of white potatoes harvested in the United States in 1919 was 3,251,703, and the production was 290,427,580 bushels, as compared with 3,668,855 acres, producing 389,194,965 bushels, in 1909. The area harvested thus shows a decrease of 417,152 acres, or 11.4 per cent, while the production shows a decrease of 98,767,385 bushels, or 25.4 per cent. The average yield per acre in 1919 was 89.3 bushels, as against 106.1 bushels in 1909. The value of the crop in 1919 was $639,440,521. While potatoes constitute an important commercial crop in certain areas, they are grown in most cases for home use alone, or merely to supply a small local demand. A summary of the available census data with regard to the production of potatoes in the United States, beginning with the production of 1849, is given in Table 84. The principal data are also given, by divisions and states, in Tables 87, 88, and 89. TABLE 84.-POTATOES-SUMMARY FOR THE UNITED STATES: 1849 TO 1919. 1919 1909 1919 1909 |
