LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE,

BUREAU OF THE CENSUS, Washington, D. C., February 8, 1922.

SIR:

I transmit herewith Volume V of the Reports of the Fourteenth Decennial Census, which contains the general report and analytical tables of the census of agriculture.

The census of agriculture was taken in conformity with "An act to provide for the Fourteenth and subsequent decennial censuses," approved March 3, 1919. The results of the census of agriculture are contained in three volumes: Volume V, the general report and analytical tables relating to agriculture, exclusive of irrigation and drainage; Volume VI (Parts 1, 2, and 3), the reports for states, with statistics for counties, relating to agriculture, exclusive of irrigation and drainage; and Volume VII, both general reports and statistics for states and counties, for irrigation and drainage.

The collection and compilation of the statistics of agriculture and the preparation of the present volume have been under the supervision of William Lane Austin, chief statistician for agriculture, assisted by Leon E. Truesdell, special agent for agriculture. The chiefs of the division for agriculture during the decennial census period were Arthur J. Hirsch, Thomas A. Devor, Bowen Crandall, and Sherman S. Slick. The maps and diagrams in this volume were prepared under the supervision of Charles S. Sloane, geographer.

Respectfully,

Hon. HERBERT HOOVER

Secretary of Commerce.

W. M. STEUART,

Director of the Census.
