CHAPTER XXXVII.

An Act making Provifion for the Payment of the Intereft on the Balances due to certain States, upon a final Settlement of the Accounts between the United States and the individual States.

E it enacted by the Senate and House of Reprefentatives of the United States of America, in Congress affembled, That intereft upon the balances reported to be due to certain states, by the commiffioners for fet- of interest tling accounts between the United States and on balance individual States, be allowed, from the laft day certain of December, one thousand seven hundred and ftates, &c. eighty-nine, and to be computed to the last day of December, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-four, at the rate of four per centum per annum: And that the amount of fuch interest be placed to the credit of the state, to which the fame shall be found due, upon the books of the treafury of the United States, and fhall bear an intereft of three per centum per annum, from and after the faid laft day of De ćember, one thousand feven hundred and nine ty-four.

tled, "An act to provide more effectually for the fettlement of the accounts, between the United States and the individual states," together with the intereft on the amount placed to the credit of any fuch ftate, for arrearages of intereft on fuch balances, agreeable to the terms of this act, be paid quarter-yearly, after the faid last day of December, one thoufand feven hundred and ninety-four; that is to fay one-fourth part thereof, on the last days of March, June, September and December, refpectively, in each year, at the offices of the commiffioners of loans, within fuch states as fhall be entitled to receive the fame; the first payment to be made on the laft day of March, what fund one thoufand feven hundred and ninety-five: And for the payment of the faid intereft, fo much of the duties arifing, yearly, on imports and tonnage, from and after the last day of December, one thousand feven hundred and ninety-four, as may be neceffary, and not heretofore otherwife appropriated, be, and the fame is hereby pledged and appropriated; and that the faith of the United States be, and the fame is hereby pledged to provide for any deficiency, that may happen, by fuch additional and permanent funds, as may be necessary therefor.

Sec. 2.
