PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

In the years since the LAWYERS' REPORTS ANNOTATED have been in use the courts have been steadily adding to their value by applying, developing, or in some way passing judgment upon or discussing the L. R. A. cases as precedents. The cases in Vols. 1-50 L. R. A. have been cited between fifty and sixty thousand times in later decisions. So great is the value added to these by this mass of later decisions that have built upon them and strengthened them, or possibly limited or distinguished them, that a summary of all that has been held about any of them in later decisions has been carefully compiled, so as to give a history of each of these L. R. A. cases as it is traced through all the later decisions that have cited it. In addition to the citations of each case by the courts, there is also noted every citation of it in any Annotation in the Lawyers' Reports Annotated, and also in footnote reference thereto from later cases in the series. The affirmance or reversal of any of these cases by the Supreme Court of the United States is also stated.

The effect of this work is to give, not only the entire history of each decision as presented by the later cases that have cited it, but also to give the substance of all that has been held by this great mass of later decisions on the points in respect of which the L. R. A. cases were referred to. The references to the case from L. R. A. annotations serve to lead into an elaborate and exhaustive discussion and analysis of the law upon the question to which it is cited, while the mere footnote references to the case form a ready reference to similar cases subsequently reported in the series.

A publication of this valuable supplement to the Lawyers' Reports Annotated was made in four large volumes, under the name of "L. R. A. Cases as Authorities," to bring it within the reach of those who already owned the reports. But present purchasers of the series get this valuable material included in the reports themselves. That part of the L. R. A. Cases as Authorities compiled for any volume of L. R. A. is in this edition bound at the end of that volume, after a colored leaf marker, for most convenient use in connection with the Reports. The materials are arranged in the order of the cases as reported, so they can be found in an instant. The L. R. A. volume pages are printed at the head of the page on the inner margin.
