cember, 1849, aforesaid, shall be good and valid in the amount of and against the persons set down therein; and that the rate bill and tax aforesaid shall not be invalid by reason of the loss of the assessment so made as aforesaid for said district, and upon which said rate bill was predicated; and said rate bill shall be final and conclusive and binding upon all parties therein, for the amount of taxes or rates, which they are or were liable to pay in said district now or heretofore; and that all collections that have been or shall hereafter be made under said rate bill, and the warrant attached thereto, in conformity therewith shall not be deemed invalid, irregular or illegal by reason of any informality or irregularity on the doings of said school society, committee of the school society, school district aforesaid, or the assessment for said district, but the same shall in all respects be deemed legal and valid against all persons whose names are set down therein, and all persons in any way interested. Provided, that said northeast school district in New Hartford shall, within two months from the passage of this resolution, and upon the presentation thereof to the said district, satisfy and pay unto the said Charles B. Richards, Miles Richards and Marquis Richards respectively the taxable costs in their respective suits aforesaid in the superior court in and for Litchfield county, against Isaac P. Steele and others for levying upon and satisfying said rate bill, upon the property of the said Charles B. Miles and Marquis Richards. And in case of the neglect or failure so to pay, upon presentation within said two months, said taxable costs, this resolution shall not affect said suits now pending as aforesaid.

ANNEXING SEVENTH SCHOOL DISTRICT, NEW PRESTON SCHOOL SOCIETY, TO FIRST SCHOOL SOCIETY IN NEW MILFORD.

Upon the petition of Marshall S. Platt and others, of New Milford, in Litchfield county:

Resolved by this Assembly, That the seventh school district in New Preston school society, be and the same is hereby annexed to and made part of the first school society in New Milford, and be henceforth entitled to all the rights, and subject to all the liabilities incident to such relation, and that the connection between said seventh district and said New Preston school society be and the same is hereby dissolved.

INCORPORATING NORTH PLAINFIELD SCHOOL SOCIETY.

PASSED 1889.

Resolved by this Assembly, That the Plainfield school society, in the town of Plainfield, be and the same is hereby divided into two school societies, and that the inhabitants living in the school districts of Shephard-hill, Central, Moosup, Goshen, Pond-hill, Green-hollow, and Blackhill, be made and constituted a school society, by the name of "North Plainfield School Society," with all the powers and privileges given to school societies; that all moneys or funds belonging to said Plainfield school society before the division as aforesaid, shall be divided between the two societies as now constituted, in proportion to the number of children in each, between the ages of four and sixteen; that the limits and boundaries of said North Plainfield school society shall be such as to embrace the territory of said districts, and that John Dunlap, Esq., one of the inhabitants of said town of Plainfield, be and is hereby authorized to warn a meeting of the electors of the "North Plainfield school society, to be held at the meeting-house in the Union village so called, in said Plainfield, on the 20th day of June, 1839, to organize said society by choosing the regular officers for the year ensuing.

INCORPORATING THE SECOND SCHOOL SOCIETY IN THE TOWN OF OLD SAY

BROOK.

Upon the petition of Richard P. Williams and others, as on file, praying for a division of the second school society in the towns of Saybrook and Old Saybrook, and the incorporation of that part of said society which lies in the town of Old Saybrook into a school society by itself, to be called by the name of the Second School Society in the town of Old Saybrook, which petition has been duly served, &c.:

Resolved by this Assembly, That all that part of the school society, known and called by the name of the Second School Society in the towns of Saybrook and Old Saybrook, lying in the present town of Old Saybrook, with all the inhabitants residing within said limits, be and the same is hereby incorporated into a separate school society, by the name of the Second School Society in the town of Old Saybrook, with all the rights, powers, privileges and immunities, and subject to all the duties and liabilities of other school societies in this state, all the rights and property of whatsoever nature and description now owned by, due or belonging to the said second school society in the towns of Saybrook and Old Saybrook,

or which may hereafter accrue to said second society, by virtue of any claim, right or title now existing, shall belong to said new school society in said town of Old Saybrook, as hereby incorporated, and said school society in said town of Saybrook, in proportion to that part of the assessment lists of the town of Old Saybrook which is in the new society as hereby incorporated, and the assessment list of the town of Saybrook of A. D. 1852, all the rights and property of whatsoever nature and description now owned by or belonging to said second school society in the towns of Saybrook and Old Saybrook, shall be divided by the present society committee for said second school society, or any two of them, on or before the 20th day of July, A. D. 1853, according to the aforesaid assessment lists, which division shall be final and conclusive; all the expense of dividing said society and property shall be paid from the income of the fund of said society by the present treasurer thereof, as allowed by said society committee, or either two of them, in proportion to said assessment lists. The present school visitors in said society shall hold their offices and have the care and oversight of all the schools therein, until others be chosen or appointed in each of the above named societies, the same as though said society had not been divided. The first meeting of said new society, as hereby incorporated, shall be holden at the school house in the Pound-hill district in said new society, on the last Monday in September, A. D. 1853, at one o'clock in the afternoon, and Richard P. Williams, and in case of his absence S. W. Starkey, shall be moderator thereof, and said meeting shall be warned by the said Williams or Starkey by setting up a notification of the same on the public sign-post within the limits of said new society at least five days before said meeting. And said new society hereby incorporated shall have all the power incident to other school societies in this state, at said first meeting, and full right to act accordingly, and the officers elected at such meeting shall hold their respective offices until others are chosen or appointed in their places. This act shall take effect and be in force on and after the rising of this assembly.

CHANGING NAME OF FIRST SCHOOL SOCIETY OF SAYBROOK.

PASSED 1853.

Resolved by this Assembly, That the name of the "First School Society of Saybrook," be and the same is hereby changed to the First School Society of Old Saybrook, any law to the contrary notwithstanding.

CHANGING NAME OF FIRST SCHOOL SOCIETY OF CHATHAM TO PORTLAND
SCHOOL SOCIETY.

PASSED 1841.

Resolved by this Assembly, That the name of the school society heretofore known by the name of the First School Society of Chatham be changed, and that said society be hereafter called and known by the name of "Portland School Society."

Resolved by this Assembly, That all that portion of the school society of the town of Thompson, all that portion of the north school society of the town of Killingly, and all that portion of the school society of the town of Pomfret, included within the limits of the town of Putnam, in the county of Windham, be and the same hereby are constituted a school society, by the name of the school society of Putnam, and as such shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges which other school societies have and possess.

SEC. 2. And all the funds now belonging to said school societies of Thompson, Pomfret, and the north school society of Killingly, shall be divided between said societies and said new society of Putnam as incorporated by this resolve, in proportion to the number of children in each school society above named, between the ages of four and sixteen years, as legally returned in the year 1854.

SEC. 3. The school society committee for said school society of Putnam, and the said old societies of Thompson, Pomfret, and the north society of Killingly, shall make the distribution of the property aforesaid, and shall settle all matters to be settled between said school societies aforesaid, on or before the first day of August, A. D. 1855; and if they do not agree, then the committee of said new school society of Putnam, and the committee of a society so disagreeing, or either of them, may apply to Stephen L. Potter, of Woodstock, and Jared D. Richmond, of Ashford, and in case of their disagreement they shall elect a third person, who are authorized and empowered to divide said property, and settle all matters in dispute growing out of this act of incorporation; which settlement, whether made by said school societies' committees, or by said referees, shall be final and conclusive upon said societies.

SEC. 4. All the records and papers belonging to said school society of Thompson, Pomfret, and the north society of Killingly, shall be and remain the sole property of said societies.

SEC. 5. The first meeting of said school society of Putnam shall be warned by Nathan Williams, Jr., George Buck and Hobart C. Cutler, or either of them, at such time and place, in said society, as they shall determine, in the same manner as is by law provided for warning school society meetings.

CONSTITUTING THE ROCKVILLE SCHOOL SOCIETY.

PASSED 1848.

Upon the petition of Phineas Talcott and others, for a division of Vernon School Society:

Resolved by this Assembly, That so much of the school society of Vernon as is included within the present limits of the Rock and North districts, in said society, and all the inhabitants living thereon, be and the same is hereby constituted a new school society, by the name of the "Rockville School Society," with all the powers, privileges and liabilities belonging to school societies in this state; and that all funds, moneys and other property now belonging to the Vernon school society, shall be equitably divided between said society and the Rockville school society, as established by this resolve, by the present committee of Vernon school society; and the committee of Rockville school society, hereafter to be appointed, on or before the 15th day of August next; or in case of the failure or refusal of said committees, or either of them, to make such division, then the same shall be made by Loren P. Waldo, Esq., of Tolland, at such time and place as he shall appoint, after he shall have given at least six days' notice, in writing, to the clerk of each of said societies, whose decision shall be final.

Resolved, That Phineas Talcott, (or in case of his failure, Alonzo Bailey,) of said Rockville, be and he is hereby authorized to warn a meeting of the electors of Rockville school society, by posting a notice thereof on the sign-post in said Rockville, at least five days before the day of meeting, to be held on the 3rd day of July next, at such place in the village of Rockville as he shall designate, for the purpose of organizing said new society, by the choice of proper officers, which officers, so chosen, shall hold their offices till the annual meeting of said society, in the year 1849.

Resolved, That all the rest of the present school society of Vernon, not included within the limits of Rockville school society, as constituted by this resolution, shall be and remain the Vernon school society.
