ANNEXING SEVENTH SCHOOL DISTRICT IN OXFORD TO BETHANY SCHOOL SO

CIETY.

PASSED 1840.

Resolved by this Assembly, That the seventh (7th) school district of the Oxford school society, be and the same hereby is annexed and set to the Bethany school society.

ANNEXING STEPHEN FRY AND HIS LAND TO THE TWELFTH SCHOOL DISTRICT IN FIRST SCHOOL SOCIETY OF RIDGEFIELD.

PASSED 1853.

Resolved, That Stephen Fry, of the first school society of the town of Ridgefield, be and he hereby is, with the land owned and occuped by him in said society, annexed to the twelfth school district, in the first society of said town.

CONCERNING THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN GRISWOLDVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT, IN WETHERSFIELD, AND WESTERN SCHOOL DISTRICT, IN ROCKY HILL.

PASSED 1850.

Upon the petition of Thomas D. Williams, Russel B. Morgan, Ashbel Belden and others, inhabitants of the western school district, in the town of Rocky Hill, praying for an alteration in the boundary line separating said district from the Griswoldville school district, in the town of Wethersfield, and the establishing of the following boundary line as the dividing line between said districts, viz:-beginning on the twenty rod highway, where the town line between Wethersfield and Rocky Hill intersects it, on the west line of said towns, and running on said town line as far as it goes on said highway, north: thence following the town line easterly until it strikes the old highway known as the Hartford and Berlin road; as per petition on file, dated March 26th, 1850; which said petition has been duly served on the Griswoldville school district, in said Wethersfield, and also on the western school district, in said Rocky Hill, and returned to this assembly:

Resolved, That the county commissioners of Hartford county are hereby authorized and empowered to go and view the premises above described,

and the route of the line which the petitioners pray may be established as the boundary line between said Griswoldville and western school districts, and to alter the present division line between said districts, and to establish the same in the manner prayed for in said petition, if they shall deem it just and proper so to do; or to establish such other dividing line as, on examination, they shall find to be just and right; first giving notice in writing to each of said districts, of the time and place of their meeting, at least twelve days previous to the said time of meeting.

And said commissioners shall make their report in writing, describing said division line as by them established and defined, and shall lodge the same in the office of the secretary of this state; and a certified copy of said report shall be deposited for record, with the clerk of each of the school societies in which said school districts are situated. And the line of division which shall be defined and established by said commissioners, shall be the dividing line between said districts; and the land lying northerly of said line shall belong to the said Griswoldville district, and the land lying southerly of said line shall belong to the said western school district.

Provided, that the fees and expenses of the commissioners in discharging the above duty shall be paid by the said western school district.

INCORPORATING THE MUDGETON DISTRICT, IN THE SCHOOL SOCIETY OF SHARON.

PASSED 1853.

Upon the petition of Solomon Bierce and others, praying for the incorporation of a school district within the towns of Sharon and Salisbury, as by said petition may more fully appear:

Resolved by this Assembly, That so much of the territory of said towns embraced within the following described limits, and all the inhabitants residing therein, be and they are hereby incorporated into a school district, to be known and called by the name of the Mudgeton District, with the usual powers and privileges of school districts, to be and remain a body corporate for the purposes aforesaid, and to belong to and be a part of the school society of Sharon, that is to say, beginning at the northwest corner of district number five, in the school society of Sharon, and in the line between said town, then running to the southwest corner of said district east of Mudge pond, so called, then to the southeast corner of Mrs. Harriet Lloyd's farm, then following the line of her farm to the southwest corner thereof, then a straight line due north to Salisbury line, then to the northwest corner of Edgar J. Reed's land in said Salisbury, then to the northeast corner of Benjamin Hamlin's land in said Salisbury, and then to the place of beginning.

And the committee of said school society of Sharon are hereby authorized to warn the first meeting of said district by posting a notice thereof in the usual form of warning school district meetings, at the store of Benjamin Hamlin, in said Sharon. And said meeting shall be holden at such time and at such place within the limits of said district as said society committee in their said notice shall appoint, for the choice of officers of said district, and for adopting such other measures as may be necessary for the proper organization of the same.

ANNEXING A PORTION OF CHESHIRE TO THE TENTH SCHOOL DISTRICT IN SOUTHINGTON.

PASSED 1842.

On the petition of Orrin Hitchcock, of Cheshire, in the county of New Haven, praying to be set off to and be annexed to the tenth school district of Southington:

Resolved by this Assembly, That the lands of Orrin Hitchcock, of Cheshire, in the county of New Haven, which lie in said Cheshire, contiguous to and adjoining the town of Southington, in quantity about sixty acres, with the buildings thereon standing, be and they are hereby annexed to and made a part of the tenth school district in Southington, and that said Hitchcock and those that shall succeed him in the occupation of said lands and buildings, shall be members of said tenth school district in said Southington school society, and entitled to all the privileges and rights, and subject to all the regulations and liabilities of members of said tenth school district in Southington; and are released and discharged henceforth from all liabilities and obligations to said sixth school district in Cheshire.

INCORPORATING SOUTH NORWALK UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT.

PASSED 1855.

Resolved, SEc. 1. That the South Norwalk Union School District, in the school society of Norwalk, be and the same is hereby made and constituted a body politic and corporate, by the name of the South Norwalk Union School District, belonging to said school society of Norwalk, shall receive its proportion of the public money, shall have the entire control of all the schools within its limits, as herein after provided, may establish

and maintain schools of different grades, and shall also have and enjoy all the powers and privileges at present enjoyed by school districts in this

state.

SEC. 2. Said district shall, at its annual meetings, choose a committee of not less than three, nor more than nine persons, who shall have the general management and care of the concerns of the said district; enumerate their scholars as required by law; employ teachers approved by the board of education; establish such capitation tax for the scholars in the different schools as they may deem necessary; and abate the taxes of such poor children belonging to said district, and attending school therein, as in their judgment require the same, and do and perform all such duties as are now devolved upon school districts, except so far as they are hereafter given to the board of education; and said district may also appoint such other officers as school districts are now by law authorized to appoint, who shall have the same powers and be subject to the same duties and liabilities as such officers in other school districts.

SEC. 3. Said district shall also, at its annual meeting, appoint a board of education, of not more than seven persons, who shall have the control and management of the schools in said district, examine, approve and dismiss teachers, prescribe the course of study to be pursued in the different schools, and make such by-laws and rules for the regulation and discipline of the schools, not inconsistent with the laws of this state, as they shall from time to time deem necessary; and all teachers and scholars shall conform to such by-laws and rules, and on neglect or refusal so to do, may be dismissed from school by said board.

SEC. 4. Said district, at its annual meeting, or at any legal meeting called for that purpose, shall have full power to lay taxes upon the polls and ratable estate, for the purpose of building and repairing school houses, and purchasing sites therefor, furnishing apparatus, fuel, books and statiorery, and also to raise such sum annually as there shall be needed, after applying the public money and the avails of the capitation tax to meet and defray the annual expenses of said district.

This act shall take effect from its passage.

AUTHORIZING THE FIRST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE FIRST SCHOOL SOCIETY OF STAMFORD TO ESTABLISH SCHOOLS OF DIFFERENT GRADES.

PASSED 1858.

Resolved, That the First School District in the first school society in the town of Stamford, may by itself or its committee, establish different grades in the school in said district, and may fix or authorize its committee to fix a rate of tuition to be paid by the persons attending the different grades in its school, or by their parents, guardians or employers, toward the expense of fuel, books or other expenses over and above the money received from the town, society or state appropriations or funds.

Provided, that the rate of tuition shall not exceed one dollar per quarter for said tuition in the primary department, and three dollars per quarter for the higher departments. And said rate of tuition may be collected by the officers of said district in the same manner as is by law now provided for the collection of school taxes or rates in school districts. Provided, that no child or children residing within said district, between the ages of four and sixteen, shall be excluded from the benefits of any of the public schools of said district, on account of the inability of the parents or guardians of such child or children to pay the tuition which may be prescribed.

ESTABLISHING THE DIVISION SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE SCHOOL SOCIETY OF

STRATFIELD.

PASSED 1858,

Upon the petition of "Division School District," in the school society of Stratfield, in the county of Fairfield, praying that said district may be established as a legal district, and that all the acts and proceedings of said district may be confirmed; therefore,

Resolved, That that part of the old south school district in the school society of Stratfield, beginning at the terminus of the Washington and Bridgeport school district, thence northerly till it strikes opposite the north corner of F. L. Curtis's lot, thence westerly of P. T. Barnum's line, following said line southerly to Cedar brook, and from thence to the sound, be and the same hereby is established a school district, with all the rights and privileges belonging to the other school districts in said society.

Resolved, That all the acts and proceedings of said district be and the same are hereby confirmed and rendered legal and binding to the same extent as if said district had been legally constituted and established, and all its acts formal and valid, and all the officers of the same legally appointed and duly qualified.

Resolved further, That the present officers of said district be and the same are hereby declared to be duly elected and qualified to act in the same manner and to the same extent as if said district had been duly formed and had proceeded in all respects according to law.
