by their treasurer or any other person by their authority and direction, according to the by-laws of this institution, shall be good and valid, and the said corporation shall at all times have power to sue, and may be sued, may defend, and shall be held to answer by the name and style aforesaid.

SEC. 3. The said corporation shall be capable of receiving from any person or persons disposed to obtain and enjoy the advantages of said incorporation, any deposit or deposits of money, not to exceed the sum of four hundred dollars from any individual in any one year, and to use and improve the same for the purposes and according to the discretion herein provided.

SEC. 4. All deposits of money received by said corporation shall be used and improved to the best advantage, by loaning the same, and in a manner not inconsistent with the laws of this state, and the income or profits thereof shall be applied and divided among the persons making the deposits, their executors or administrators, in just proportion, with such reasonable deduction as may be chargeable thereon, and the principal of such deposit or deposits may be withdrawn by the owner or owners thereof, or by any other person or persons duly authorized for said purpose, on giving notice of such intention in writing, and lodging the same with the secretary of said corporation at least three months previous to the withdrawing of such deposit or deposits.

SEC. 5. Said corporation shall, at their annual meeting, which shall be holden in the month of July, have power to elect by ballot any other person or persons to be members of said corporation, and shall so elect whenever the members of said corporation shall be reduced below ten. Provided, however, that no person so elected shall become a member of said corporation until he shall assent thereto by a written declaration by him subscribed on the books of said corporation.

SEC. 6. A meeting of the members of said corporation shall hereafter be held in Danielsonville, in Windham county, some time in the month of July annually, and at such other times as they may judge expedient; and any seven members of said corporation, the president, vice president, treasurer or secretary being one, shall be a quorum; and said corporation, at their annual meeting, shall have power to elect and choose a president, vice president, trustees, and all other such officers as to them shall appear necessary, which officers so chosen shall continue in office one year, and until others are chosen in their places; and all officers so chosen, shall be under oath to the faithful performance of the duties of their offices respectively.

SEO. 7. No member of said corporation shall be a hirer or borrower, or surety for any hirer or borrower, of the funds of said corporation, or any part thereof. And no president, vice president or trustee of said corporation shall be entitled to or receive any compensation for his ser

vices.

SEC. 8. That William James, George Danielson and Edwin Ely, or either two of them, be and they hereby are authorized to call the first meeting of said corporation, by causing to be given to or left at the dwelling-house of each member of the corporation a printed or written notice of the time and place of holding said meeting; and said meeting shall be held at Danielsonville, in the month of July, 1855.

SEC. 9. It shall be the duty of the president and trustees of said corporation to make an annual report to the general assembly, containing an account of the amount of deposits and dividends declared and made. And said corporation shall be subject to the provisions of all the public acts of this state relating to savings banks.

SEC. 4. This act may be altered, amended or repealed at the pleasure of the general assembly.

TITLE XX v.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

INCORPORATING THE CENTER DISTRICT IN BERLIN.

PASSED 1842.

Upon the petition of Samuel Hart, 2d, and others, inhabitants of the school society of Kensington, in the town of Berlin, praying to be incorporated into a school district:

Resolved by this Assembly, That all that part of the school society of Kensington, in the town of Berlin, included within the limits hereafter mentioned, be and they are hereby constituted and made a school district, to be called the "Center District," in the school society of Kensington, in the town of Berlin, the bounds of which shall be as follows: Beginning at the northwest corner, which is to be in the line between the towns of Southington and Berlin, east of the house of Orson Dunham, in said Southington, at the northeast corner of the sixth school district in Southington; the west line is to run southwardly in the line of said sixth district, to the southwest corner of the farm of Moses Lyman, in said Kensington; thence the line runs east, in the south lines of the lands of Moses Lyman, Elijah Hooker and Luther Stocking, to the highway called the Blue Hill road, eighty rods south of the house of Hubert R. Francis; thence northward, in the center of said highway twenty-four rods: thence east and north in the south and east lines of the lands of John Kent, Hubert R. Francis, Elijah Hooker, Horace Haskell, Azubah Loveland, Russel Cole and Amy Chapman, so as to include their lands till it strikes the highway called the "Turkey Hill road," sixteen rods east of the house of said Amy Chapman; thence west, in the center of said highway,

one hundred and twenty-five rods; thence northward, in the center of the highway that runs to the house of Benjamin Hart, twenty rods to the northeast corner of the land of Friend Street; thence westwardly in the north line of the land of said Friend Street, till it strikes the highway north of his house; thence northeasterly to the end of the Swamp road, so called, that runs by the house of Nelson Stoddard; thence westward in a right line to the place of beginning, in said town line. And the inhabitants of said school district shall have, possess and enjoy all the rights and privileges of other school districts established by law; and shall be entitled to and receive their full share and proportion of the interest of the school fund of this state, of the school fund of said school society of Kensington, and of all other public moneys appropriated for the encouragement of schools, in such way and manner as is or shall be by law prescribed; and be subject to all the rules and regulations of other school districts, and of the school society of Kensington, consistent with the laws of this state. For the purpose of organizing said new district, Thomas Upson and Samuel Hart, 2d, are appointed a committee to call a meeting of the inhabitants of said district, at such time and place in said districts as they shall appoint, by placing a notice of the same upon the door of the building now occupied as a school house in said district, at least five days before the time of holding said meeting, at which meeting the inhabitants of said district, legally qualified to vote, may proceed to elect and appoint all proper officers, and transact all other business, legal and proper to be done at an annual school district meeting; and the officers appointed at said meeting shall hold their offices until others are chosen in their place, and sworn when necessary.

CONSTITUTING THE NORTH WESTERN SCHOOL DISTRICT, IN BRANFORD.

PASSED 1845.

Resolved by this Assembly, That a new school district be formed in said Branford, to be called the Northwestern District; bounded westerly by the East Haven school society, thence on the north by a line running due west from the northwest corner of Loring D. Hosley's farm, and by the northerly line of his said farm to the center of the highway called the Kummuck road, thence by the center of said road to the stone bridge east of said Hosley's house, thence by the run of water known as the Beaver Swamp Main Ditch, to the present dividing line of the quarter and western school districts, thence easterly by a straight line to the southeast corner of the land of Bradley Chidsey, on the westerly side of said Kummuck road, thence by the center of said road to the easterly line extended of Jeremiah Russell's land, thence by said line to the middle of the main road to New Haven, thence by the middle of said main road to the brook crossing the same, west of James Barker's house, thence by said brook to a point on the west bank of the same, fifteen rods north of the

stone bridge across the Quarter brook, thence due west to the middle of the Alps road, thence by the middle of said Alps road to the summit of Great Hill, thence by a straight line to the southeast corner of Timothy Cook's barn, thence by a straight line to the junction of Musquito Cove creek and Farm river; and that the inhabitants living within said boundaries have all the powers and privileges which belong to the other school districts in this state.

Resolved, That John Plant be authorized to warn a meeting of said district, for the organization thereof and the transaction of all necessary business, at the school house therein, on the twentieth day of June, A. D. 1845, and said Plant shall preside at said meeting.

Resolved, That said district hereby constituted, shall pay to the Western district in said Branford towards the cost of the school house, recently erected therein, the sum of fifty dollars, within six months from the rising of this assembly, to be raised by a tax upon the list of 1844, or otherwise, as said district shall direct; and thereupon, the residents of said new district and said new district shall be released and discharged from all liability and obligations to said Western district.

ESTABLISHING DIVISION LINE BETWEEN THE DAMASCUS AND MILL PLAIN SCHOOL DISTRICTS, IN THE SCHOOL SOCIETY OF BRANFORD.

PASSED 1854.

Resolved by this Assembly, That the divison line between the school district of Damascus and the school district of Mill Plain, in the school society of Branford, shall be hereafter in part as follows: commencing at the point of the angle of the present bounds at Fresh Meadow Brook, and running thence northeasterly, to the southeast corner of John J. Bartholomew's barn, and from thence, running northerly, to the southeast corner of the house of Daniel Rogers; and that John J. Bartholomew and all the land between said new bounds and the old boundary line between said districts, shall be and the same are hereby set off from said Damascus district and annexed to the Mill Plain school district in the said school society of Branford.

CONSTITUTING SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 13, IN BRISTOL

PASSED 1845.

Upon the petition of Jonathan C. Brown and others, of Bristol :

Resolved by this Assembly, That the territory hereafter described, sitnate in the town of Bristol, and the inhabitants now residing thereon, and all others who may hereafter reside thereon, be and they are hereby made into, formed and constituted a school district, to be called District No. 13, with all the powers and privileges, and subject to all the duties and liabilities of the other school districts in this state, to wit: beginning on the line between the towns of Bristol and Farmington, in the center of the county road leading to Bristol Basin, and thence west in the center of said county road to the east end of the second tier of lots in said Bristol, thence north on the east end of said tier of lots to the south line of land of Ira Churchill, on the north bank of the river, thence west on said Churchill's south line to his southwest corner, thence north on the west line of said Churchill's land to the highway, thence west in the center of the highway until it arrives to the stone wall west of the house of Edward A. Johnson, thence north on the wall standing on the east line of land of Orrin L. Botsford to the south line of land belonging to the heirs of Noble A. Pierce, deceased, or their assignees, thence east on the south line of said Pierce's land to the southeast corner of said Pierce's land, thence in a direct line to the southwest corner of the land of Lott Jerome, and thence east on the south line of the land of said Lott Jerome to the town line between the towns of Bristol and Farmington, and thence south on said town line to the place of beginning.

Provided always, that the above lines and limits of said school district may be altered by any legal meeting of Bristol School Society; provided, that at least six days' previous notice shall be given of the proposed alterations to each and every district that may be altered by such proposed alteration, otherwise the said school district shall be placed on the same grounds as the other districts in said school society, and any territory may be taken from or added to said district, at the pleasure of said school society, after having given notice as aforesaid.

CONFIRMING THE DOINGS OF CERTAIN MEETINGS OF THE THIRD SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE SCHOOL SOCIETY OF BRISTOL.

WHEREAS, on the 22d day of August, A. D. 1853, meetings were held of the then third and fourth school districts in the school society of Bristol, in the county of Hartford, at which votes were passed in favor of consolidating said districts and uniting them in one for the purpose of es
