A MS. note on the fly-leaf reads "Cantillon, très estimé." This book is usually attributed to Philippe de Cantillon or Philip Cantillon, a merchant of London. There is good reason to believe, as shown in Prof. Jevons's article mentioned below, that, if by Cantillon at all, it is by Richard Cantillon, who was possibly a brother of Philip, and has been confounded with him. Little is known of either. Richard Cantillon died in 1734; but the Essai was first published in 1755 (not 1752, as given by some authorities). The pretence of an English original and a London imprint is doubtless a blind on account of the freedom of criticism on the French government in the book itself. See Nouvelle biographie, viii. 528; Biographie universelle, Ix. 121; Grimm, Correspondance littéraire. i. 332 sq.; Fréron. Année littéraire, 1755, v. 357; and Prof. Jevons's article in the Contemporary review, Jan. 1881, xxxix. 61. It came to the library with the following note from Mr. Foxwell, who is a fellow of St. John's college, Cambridge, Eng. and professor of political econin London university.

"St. John's College, Cambridge. Aug. 8, 1882.

"The accompanying copy of the "Essai sur la nature du commerce en général," first printed in 1755, is one of two I was fortunate enough to discover in Paris in 1881. Those who will refer to a very interesting article of Prof. Jevons in the Contemporary review for Jan. 1881 will find that the book is one of great interest both to bibliographers and economists; and in England at least it is supposed to be of some rarity. No copy was known to exist in Oxford or Cambridge when Mr. Jevons wrote; and the British museum copy is not in such good condition as this one. I had looked in vain for a copy in this country for four years, and attempts to obtain one through Paris booksellers had been equally unsuccessful. It occurred to me therefore that there might not be a copy at Haryard; and as the copy which I have

kept for myself is ultimately destined to find its way to the library of old Cambridge university, I thought I should like the sister copy to go to the Cambridge across the water, which is often in our thoughts here, and with which I have been glad to feel myself in more living connection through my friend the Revd Dr. Hale, who has kindly consented to be the bearer of this little message. H. S. Foxwell.

Perhaps I ought to say that the book is, in each copy I have seen, attributed by MS. entry, to Cantillon; - which Cantillon, is a puzzle for the bibliographers. The date of the publication is 1755; but the work must have been written much earlier, probably before Hume's Essays; and if so, the writer must take a high place amongst the founders of economic science. For an admirable discussion of these and other points I would again recommend the essay of Prof. Jevons, which is a characteristic example of the ingenuity and thoroughness of that brilliant economist."
