In a few days your birth-day will be once more, and I already see my mother and my sisters coming to you with presents, the proofs of their affection. I am sorry, very sorry, that I cannot be with you this time, nor even send a small offering as a token of my gratitude and love. But at least I will express my affec tion and gratitude in a letter, knowing that that itself will be agreeable to you. Indeed, dear father, my heart is ever filled with these sentiments, but particularly to-day, when the thoughts of your approaching birth-day recall to my mind the innumerable testimonials of affection and kindness, for which I am indebted, both to you and to my dear mother. How kindly have you ever provided for me, how many sacrifices made both for me and my brothers and sisters, how carefully removed from us every thing, that might prove injurious to us, and conducted us in the path of righteousness. Aber in einem Briefe will ich wenigstens Liebe und Dank aussprechen, und ich weiß, Du wirst Dich auch darüber freuen. Ja, theurer Vater, von Liebe und Dank gegen Dich ist mein Herz beständig erfüllt, vornehmlich aber heute, wo der Gedanke an Deinen bevorstehenden Geburtstag die Erinnerung an die unzähligen Beweise der Liebe und Güte, die ich Dir sowie der Mutter verdanke, erneuert. Wie so liebevoll hast Du nicht immer für mich gesorgt, wie so manches Opfer mir sowie Deinen übrigen Kindern gebracht, wie sorgsam Alles, was uns schaden konnte, von uns entfernt und uns zu allem Guten geführt! Innig gerührt erkenne ich die Größe Deiner Liebe, und es soll gewiß stets mein eifrigstes Bestreben sein, mich durch Gehorsam, Fleiß und gutes Betragen derselben immer würdiger zu machen. Believe me, not a day passes, but in the silence of my chamber, I recall with a grateful heart the many proofs of your untiring kindness and solicitude, and pray to God to preserve the valued life of so good, so affectionate a mother; but, to-day, in particular, allow me to express the feelings of my filial love and veneration for you. To give you cause for joy, at present, and aiso hereafter to embellish the evening of your life, is a promise which I renew on this your birth-day.

Accept with kindness and indulgence, the little present, which must recommend itself more by the heart of the donor, than by its intrinsic worth. I only hope that my choice will not displease you altogether. Continue to think of me affectionately and bless your most affectionate Son.

Dear Mother:

It is late not far from midnight and only single lights show that there are still human watchers. Generally this hour finds me fast asleep, but to-night I must steal an hour from the drowsy God, for the day after to-morrow is your birth-day, the mail starts at seven in the morning, and I have not yet been able to write to you and to give you joy at the return of this day. I know that you do not require this from me, as a proof of my fervent love and of my warmest wishes for your happiness, but I could not enjoy this day, if I had not sent you at least a few lines to express my best wishes for your continued welfare.

Liebe Mutter!

Der heutige Tag ist besonders wichtig für mich, denn er erinnert mich lebhaft daran, daß Dein Dasein und Leben auch das meinige, mein Glück und meine Bildung geschaffen hat. Zwar denke ich alle Tage in der Stille mit dankbarem Herzen an die vielfachen Beweise Deiner unermüdlichen Güte und Sorgfalt gegen mich und bete zu Gott für die Erhaltung des theuren Lebens einer so guten, zärtlichen Mutter; aber Du wirst mir besonders heute erlauben, die Gefühle meiner findlichen Liebe und Verehrung lauter an den Tag zu legen. Dir nicht nur jezt Freude zu machen, sondern auch einst den Abend Deines Lebens zu verschönern, dies ist das Gelübde, wozu mich Dein heutiges Geburtsfest von Neuem auffordert.

Nimm mit Güte und Liebe das kleine Geschenk auf, das sich mehr Durch das Herz des Gebers, als durch seinen Werth empfehlen muß. Ich wünsche nur, daß meine Wahl Dir nicht ganz mißfällt. Denke meiner ferner mit Liebe, und schenke Deinen mütterlichen Segen Dich zärtlich liebenden Sohne.
