PREFACE.

IT

T is only just to myself to state that the portions of this small volume published in former editions are almost entirely unaltered. No one could be more surprised than I was at the favourable notices of the work which appeared in the newspapers and magazines at the time. I have felt, however, that the views then advanced were too one-sided; and in this edition I have very imperfectly succeeded in supplying the deficiency,—though the work is very greatly enlarged. I cast myself upon the forbearance of those who may read these pages. If some poor young men, beginning to read and think, should be stimulated to mental and moral culture, I shall be amply recompensed for whatever trouble and risk the present publication involves. In this age and nation young men need all the aid that can be given them, and the Christian Church cannot afford to neglect them. This has led me to make the present effort, with what success or otherwise I must leave others to judge.

WITHINGTON,

July 18, 1979.
