designed to succeed, on a more extended plan, the work of a similar character, issued by the same author, two years ago, which was prepared only to embrace the city of Boston and its vicinity.

This volume is more confidently prepared and offered to the Profession in consequence of the favorable reception given to its predecessor, and in conformity to the assurance of many that the value of such a work would be greatly increased by the gathering of information from a wider field, and making it useful and interesting to a larger circle.

Like the former, it is intended that this work shall be thoroughly practical in its character, and shall contain such information concerning societies and associations, hospitals and dispensaries, charitable asylums, institutions, and societies, professional institutions of education within the State, laws and ordinances relating to professional men, lists of nurses, surgical instrument makers, chemists, microscope dealers, &c., &c., as is daily needed by every active member of the
