35. That at the first meeting of the Board of Fireto each divi- Masters, after the passing of this ordinance, or as soon thereafter as may be convenient, the said Board shall appoint one person in each of the said divisions, who shall be called the fire-man of the said division; and shall be distinguished in such manner as the FireMasters shall direct.

36. That it shall be the duty of the said division fire-man, whenever an alarm of fire takes place, instantly to proceed through the division for which he has been appointed, and by all due means, to alarm the citizens, and to call on them to turn out of their houses, to aid in extinguishing the fire; to see, order,

and direct, that all the fire buckets belonging to the citizens in his said division, be brought out of their houses, and to direct the citizens to repair with them to the place where the fire is; also to repair to the the place where the ladder, hook and rope is kept in his said division, and to direct their being carried to the fire; and if the fire should take place in the night time, to direct the inhabitants in his division, to place at least one light in their house, in a window fronting the street; and if the fire shall not take place in the division to which he belongs, he is to proceed to where the fire is, and there attend and obey such further orders and instructions as he shall receive from the Board of Fire-Masters or any of them.

37. That any person appointed as a division fire- Fine on refuman, in the manner before mentioned, who shall refuse to serve in the said office, he shall be fined in a sum not exceeding twenty dollars, to be recovered in the Inferior City Court. Provided always, That no person shall be obliged to serve in the said office for more than one year in five, nor any over the age of forty-five years.

38. Preamble.

Eas Company.

Whereas Mr. Robert Mills has made propositions to Council for the establishment of a Gas Company in this city, in conjunction with other persons who will be associated with him. To promote therefore so important an establishment whereby the streets and public buildings of this city may be lighted with Gass, many of the arts may be facilitated and a brilliant light introduced into stores and ware-houses and the apartment of every dwelling:

1. Be it ordained, That the said Robert Mills and as company such other persons as shall be associated with him, to lay pipes, to form a Gas Company, shall have the privilege,

and the said company shall be hereby authorized to lay the pipes, required for a Gas establishment or factory and for the conveyance of Gas in and through all and every street, lane, alley and public part of this city; and also the pavements of the said streets, lanes or alleys; and also remove any pavement, or any matter or thing which may be in the way of laying the said pipes, or any part thereof. Provided, That the said pavement or earth removed be replaced to the satisfaction of the Commissioners of Streets and Lamps and at the charge and expence of the said company after the pipes or part or parts thereof for the conveyance of Gas are laid in a manner suitable to the purpose intended. And provided Factories not also, That the factories and furnaces for making and to exceed five. furnishing the Gas, shall not exceed five in number, within the bounds of this city; and that the situation for each of them shall be approved by the City Council.
