Names to distinguish the

streets.

ficient for such streets, but similar names have been given to two different streets in this city; which have been found by experience to be highly inconvenient and liable to create confusion. Be it therefore ordained, That henceforth the following streets shall be known and distinguished by no other names but such as are herein set forth, viz.

Charles, Quince, Anson and Scarborough-streets, by the name of Anson-street.

Centurion, Society and Federal-streets, by the name of Society-street.

Pitt-street between Anson-street and Cooper river, by the name of Laurens'-street.

East Bay-street, East Bay-street continued, and Front street, by the name of East Bay-street.

Trott and Wentworth-streets, by the name of Wentworth-street.

Moore and Cumberland-streets, by the name of Moore

street.

Elliot-street, Elliot-street continued, and St. Michael's-alley, by the name of Elliot-street.

Chalmer's-alley and Beresford's-alley, by the name
of Chalmer's alley.

Lynch's-lane and Lightwood's-alley, by the name of
Lynch's-lane.

Friend and Allen-streets, by the name of Friend

Whereas by an act of the Legislature of this State, Passed, July passed and ratified on the nineteenth of December, 23th, 1817. one thousand eight hundred and nine, it is made the luty of the Intendant and Wardens of the City of Charleston, on or before the first day of August, once Preamble. n every seven years, to divide or cause to be divided, the whole of Charleston into four divisions or Wards; and further declares, that the inhabitants of each of which divisions or Wards, shall elect such number of Wardens as such division or Ward shall be entitled to on equal principles of population and the city taxation: Provided always, the whole number of Wardens for the aforesaid city, shall not exceed twelve; whose qualifications shall be the same as directed in an act passed on the seventeenth day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and eight: And whereas a census of the population of the said city, and an estimate of the taxable property of the same hath been lately made in conformity to the provisions of the said act:

1. Be it ordained, That the divisions or Wards of Divisions or Charleston, be numbered, divided and defined as fol- Ward the lows:

WARD No. 4.-Bounded east by the centre of Meeting street; south by the centre of Queen-street; west by Ashly river; north by Comming's creek, Boundary, Vanderhorst's and Hutson-streets.

direct, within the limits of each division or Ward,* elect such number of Wardens to represent each division or Ward as follows, viz:-Ward No. 1, three Wardens-Ward No. 2, two Wardens-Ward No. 3, three Wardens-Ward No. 4, four Wardens; being the proportion to which each division or Ward is entitled to, on the equal principles of population and taxation.

3. That this ordinance shall be in force to the full for seven years end and term of seven years from the date hereof and no longer.

Weights and Measures.

Whereas, it is expedient for the due adjustment 22d 1814. and regulation of the Weights and Measures used in this city, that the standards recognized or established either by custom or by law, should be specified and declared:

1. Be it ordained, That the inch, the foot and the yard measures, which have been hereto always used in this State, be, and they are hereby declared standard measures of extension; and are to be used as such, for all mechanical, commercial or mathematical purposes, for which they shall or may be required.

2. That the Troy weight grain, be, and the same is hereby declared a unit standard for weight, from and by which the standard Avoirdupois pound and ounce weights are to be adjusted: That the pound Avoirdupois weight used for commercial purposes in this city, shall contain (7000) seven thousand grains Troy; which are equal to fourteen ounces eleven penny weights and sixteen grains Troy: That the ounce Avoirdupois weight, used for the same purposes, shall contain (437 1-2) four hundred and thirtyseven and a half grains Troy; which are equal to eighteen penny weights and five and a half grains Troy. And that the Troy weights, used by the banking institutions now, or that may hereafter be, established in this city, be, and they are hereby declar

Dry Measure.

3. That the cubic inch, which has been always hitherto used in this State, be, and the same is hereby declared a unit standard for the adjustment of all measures of capacity. And whereas, by an act of the Legislature of this State, passed on the twelfth day of April, seventeen hundred and sixty eight, the bushel, half bushel, peck and half peck, according to the London standard, were established as lawful measures: It is, therefore, hereby declared, that agreeably to the said standard for dry measure, a bushel contains, (2150 4-10) two thousand one hundred and fifty and four tenths, cubic inches; a half bushel contains (1075 2-10) one thousand and seventy-five and two tenths, cubic inches; a peck contains (537 6-10) Adjustment of five hundred and thirty seven and six tenths, cubic inches; and a half peck or gallon contains (268 8-10) two hundred and sixty-eight and eight tenths, cubic inches; also, that a quart contains (67 2-10) sixtyseven and two tenths, cubic inches; and a pint contains (33 6-10) thirty three and six tenths, cubic inches. And it is further declared, that the Wine Wine measure measure gallon used for commercial purposes in this city, ought to contain (231) two hundred and thirty one cubic inches; the quart (57 3-4) fifty seven and three fourths cubic inches; the pint (28 9-10) twenty eight and nine tenths, cubic inches; the half pint (14 4-10) fourteen and four tenths, cubic inches; and the gill (7 2-10) seven and two tenths, cubic inches.

4. That all weights used by individuals for commercial purposes in this city, shall be made of iron or brass; and that all yard measures used in this city for commercial purposes, shall be stamped at both ends, in the manner hereinafter described.

6. That the standards for dry measure herein beWeights to be fore described, that is to say, the bushel, half bushel, peck, half peck or gallon, quart and pint measure, for measuring grain and all other commodities and articles sold in this city by dry measure, shall be under the control, and subject to the regulation and gov ernment of the Commissioners of the Markets, as heretofore and in manner directed by the "ordinance "for the uniform regulation and government of the public markets in the City of Charleston; for adjustment of weights and measures in the said city: "and for other purposes therein mentioned:" passed the sixth May, eighteen hundred and seven.* And the said Commissioners of the Markets, shall als retain under their government and control the Avoit dupois standard weights now belonging to the city, and in their possession; which said weights shall be considered, and they are hereby declared the stan dard weights for the public markets in this city, and for the markets only. And the said Commissioners are hereby directed from time to time, as maybe found expedient, to cause the said measures and weights to be examined, adjusted and regulated, agreeably to the standards both for weight and ca city, and in the proportions herein before declard and expressed.t
