rent of thirty-seven and an half cents for the use of a fisher's stall; and every transient person, who may only occasionally sell or offer for sale fresh fish at the Fish Market, shall pay to the Clerk thereof one cent for every string or half string, by him or her offered for sale at the said Market; but the Commissioners of the Markets shall be authorized, with the approPunishment or bation of the City Council, to alter the foregoing rates from time to time. And every person failing or neglecting to pay such weekly rent or string money, as the case may be; or occupying another stall or place at the Fish Market, than as assigned to him or her by the Commissioners or by the Clerk thereof; or selling fish contrary to the regulations of the Commissioners of the Markets, relative to strings or weight, shall for each and every such such offence incur such fines, forfeitures, penalties or punishments respectively as pointed out in the eleventh clause of this ordinance. 16. That after the Market in Queen-street shall Market to re- have been discontinued, as to the selling of flesh, main as a pub- vegetables and fish, as aforesaid, the said Market shall be removed with its building and appurtenances, agreeably to the City Council's directions, after which removal the ground, thereunto belonging and appertaining, shall be kept open as a public street and passage way; that the Market in Boundary-street shall be kept as a public Market; but that from and after the present lease of the lot, on which the Market on South-Bay* hath been established, the said Market shall be discontinued, unless the said lot should previously be offered to the city, free of rent, Conditions on for a term of not less than twenty-one years, in which South-Bay case it shall and may be continued during the pleaMarket is to sure of the City Council. 17. That every day in the week, (Sunday except- Markets and ed) shall be, and hereby is, appointed a public market market days. day within this city; and that the public markets shall be held at such place or places, as the City Council shall from time to time determine and establish, and while such determination and establishment shall be and remain of force. But no person or persons shall sell or offer for sale any species of meat or of vegetables or other provisions, at any of the public markets in Charleston before sun rise in Market hours. the morning, at which time the market bell shall be rung, nor longer than eleven o'clock in the forenoon between the first day of June and the last day of September, or twelve o'clock at noon between the the first day of October and the last day of May; except on Saturdays, when the markets shall be open from morning till sun-set, and except also as to fresh fish and other aquatic animals, as well as to grain and fruit, which may be exposed for sale at the markets from morning till sun-set on every day, Sundays excepted. And any and every white person or free person of colour, selling or offering for sale at any ed upon those of the public markets any of the foregoing articles, from the hours after the hours above limitted respectively, shall for each and every such offence forfeit and pay a sum, not exceeding ten nor less than five dollars, or suffer a forfeiture of the article or articles so offered for sale, as may be adjudged by any three commissioners of the markets; and every slave, herein in anywise offending, shall for each and every such offence, either forfeit the article or articles so offered for sale, or incur such punishment, as is pointed out in the second clause of this ordinance, concerning slaves, unless therefrom released on the terms stated in the said clause.

20. That no person or persons shall sell or offer for sale, in any of the public Markets or in any other part of the city, any unwholesome or stale articles of Penalty or pròuision, or any poor carrion, blown, puffed up or on selling un unsound meat, or measly pork, under a penalty not sound meat or exceeding twenty dollars, to be adjudged by any three sions. 21. That it shall not be lawful to or for any person, to purchase in any of the public Markets, or in any other part of the City, any meat or provisions or other article, such as is or are usually sold in the said Forestalling public Markets, with intent to sell the same again in any Market on the same or any other day, under the penalty of a sum not exceeding twenty dollars, or a forfeiture of the article or articles, to be adjudged by the Commissioners of the Markets or any three of them, for each and every such offence, if committed by a white person or by a free person of colour; or if committed by a slave, on pain of forfeiting such article or articles as aforesaid, or of incurring such punishment, as is pointed out in the second clause of this ordinance, respecting slaves, unless therefrom released on the terms stated in the said clause.
