That the Wearer was eminent for a foul confecrated to Purity and • Love.'

This excellent man was fucceeded by a Lady of fuperior extraction and fingular defert. She was introduced by Modefly, whofe humble maxims fhe had' never tranfgreffed. On her right hand walked the Mufe Erato, to denote her affectionate difpofition; and on her left, Melpomene, to mark her skill in mufic." Her train was fupported by a youth whofe name was Good Humour, and whofe afpect befpoke a mind infpirited by vivacity, and brightened into gladnefs. Her ftature was not of that lofty kind, which is particularly adapted to command refpect; but in her countenance graciousness was feated, and her fmiles were the genuine expreffion of benevolence. She moved" with a majefty foftened by eafe. Her appearance all together created in the beholders a pleafing intereft, which was

heightened into admiration, when they heard her ftory.

Born a Princefs in a foreign court, not remarkable for its magnificence, fhe had early enlivened it by her gaiety of heart, as the always adorned it by the decency of her manners. Thefe, united with a confiderable share of elegant accomplishments, and a peculiar benignity of nature, had held her up as an object worthy the regards of a Prince, whofe youth and elevation, placed as he was at the head of a great people, and furrounded with all that could flatter his paffions, had not power to feduce him from the defire of attaching his heart to a votaress of VIRTUE, and feeking his fatisfaction in domeftic joys. The report of her excellence, having reached his ear, had fixed his choice. Although, when she was first seen by the nation upon whose protection fhe had thrown herself, where imagination had expected to find her not lefs beautiful than.

worthy, their fond hopes feemed but little gratified in her perfonal figure, fhe had yet, by a demeanour irresistibly sweet as well as uniformly prudent, gained every hour on the esteem of all that approached her; till at last fhe ftole upon their hearts, and became the most univerfally beloved character in the kingdom: nor had her popularity been ever, in a long feries of years, forfeited with any party, fhaken by any faction, or undermined by any political cabal. Thofe, who differed from each other moft widely on all other subjects, warmly agreed in admiring her gentle qualities and captivating deportment; which no height of ftation, no blaze of splendour, and no breath of applaufe, had at any time been able to alter or abate.

In her family, fhe had always fhone with the fame foft luftre. By her chearful converfation, her fpritely humour, her enchanting meeknefs, the never

ceafing attentions of duty and obeifance, and the unwearied exertions of maternal fondnefs, had invariably fecured for her, in the bofom of her royal Partner, a throne ten thousand fold more defirable than any which Ambition can boaft, while they ferved to footh that bofom, amidst the multiplied perplexities infeparable from the government of a wide-extended. and much-divided empire. Bleffed with a numerous and flourishing offspring, this admirable woman, far from devolving them wholly on the care of ftrangers, like many a fashionable mother of greatly inferior condition, deemed it her glory to tend their health, to watch their fafety, to ftudy their opening minds, and by poffeffing them with a timely reverence for TRUTH, RELIGION, and VIRTUE,

to prevent the contagion of a court, and lay the fureft bafis of every amiable and princely qualification, fuch as might render them in future years the increafing delight of their parents,

the darlings of Britain, and the ornaments of humanity.

The uncommon complacence which this account produced in the GODDESS, her Attendants, and the whole Affembly, was ftrongly apparent; it kindled every eye into rapture. "Thou beft of "wives, of mothers, and of queens!" faid VIRTUE in the warmest accents of approbation," thou bright model of "various excellence! how fhall I affign "thee an adequate reward?" She paused, as if to confider by what means she might moft fignificantly manifeft her favour. She looked round her, and proceeded, "My worshippers and fol"lowers will furely rejoice, on this blifs"ful occafion, to contemplate the Pro

geny of fo beloved a lady; as her "confcious foul must be ravished to "behold them the objects of universal "tenderness and joyful zeal." She then"ordered them to be ufhered in. The
