He held the commission of major in the 149th Regiment of Infantry during the war of 1812, and was with his regiment encamped at White Plains for some time. In personal appearance he was of commanding presence, being nearly six feet in height and of large and well-built frame. He possessed a fine, rosy complexion, which adhered to him up to the time of his death, and he was remarked by all who knew him late in life to be the picture of a healthful old age. He was of a genial and kindly disposition, and especially fond of children, and was a great favorite among the young people of the village. He was especially noted for his unbounded hospitality, and his house was constantly filled with visitors from among his friends and kindred.
