EAT DINNER TONIGHT
OUT UNDER THE TREES

There's nothing in the world-regardless of cost-that the whole
family enjoys more than a picnic dinner out under the trees.

If you don't believe it, ask them now how they would like to eat
a cold dinner out in the suburbs or in the park tomorrow night.
The vote will be unanimous for it.

And such a happy busy-ness as you will see around the house
tomorrow.

The kiddies will take the plan to bed with them and they'll wake up talking about it tomorrow morning.

And how friend wife will enjoy planning everything!

They'll be out on the front steps, straining their eyes for you, when you come home from work. The baskets will be packed and ready You can bank on that.

Then a cool, comfortable quick ride on one of our cars to a score or more of places just made for picnic parties.

You'll find your appetite whetted up like a butcher's knife by the time you reach the green, shady spot where you pitch camp. And how you and the rest of the family will eat!

There won't be any left-over problem to deal with.

And, after you've eaten and stretched out, sighing comfortably, you'll declare

"This is the life!"

YOUR KIDDIES WANT
TO GO ON A PICNIC
TONIGHT

Page the family today on this question:

"How many want to go on a picnic tonight with hardboiled eggs, sandwiches, potato salad, and everything?" Watch the kiddies' hands go up.

And mother's too.

To say nothing of Dad's. The old boy may bluff that he doesn't care about it, but that's what he says every circus day, too. He wants to go just the same.

Nothing beats a basket picnic to take the family's mind off coal bills, income taxes, high rents, and other troubles that come to everyone these days.

Pack up the old family basket tonight. Put the whole family on one of our cars and go to any of the dozen or more green, grassy, cool spots that invite you to make yourself at home.

You'll eat until you don't think you'll ever be able to move again. But soon the cool evening breezes and the smell of fields will fill you with such pep that you will cut up didoes with the kids like a two year old.

How many times, these fall days, have you said or thought:

"I'd give $10 to be out in the country!"

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

Try this: When your work is done this evening, get on
one of our open cars and ride out to the end of the line and
back-take a good look at nature's changing garb.

You'll easily get $10 worth of fresh air and breeze.
And all for

cents.

Think how cheap that is.

Less than the cost of many ice cream cones.

Half the price of an ice cream soda.

The cost of a

mile ride on a stuffy steam train.

Much less than the cost of running an automobile a mile.

The refreshed feeling lasts, too.

Take a street car ride tonight.

SECTION AD EMPHASIZING ECONOMY OF STREET CAR RIDING. A SALES

ARGUMENT THAT CANNOT BE DISPUTED.

Take Mother for a Ride

Think of mother these fall evenings.

When the evening meal is over, she has a rest period.

Then she longs for some cool, fresh air and a change of scenery.

Just to go some place in comfort-to see new things-to forget household cares.

But, if someone doesn't suggest a place for
her to go, she's likely to hunt up something to
keep her hands busy-darning or mending—
until bedtime.

Then tomorrow and tomorrow the same thing.
She won't complain. But it isn't fair. It isn't

square.

When the meal is over tonight, just tell her to chuck work and everything and go with you— FOR A STREET CAR RIDE.

Sure, she'll insist at first that she doesn't want to go, but when she agrees-and she will-she'll be mightily pleased.

J. N. SHANNAHAN:- Mr. President and gentlemen: This is a long report and I do not propose to take your time by any lengthy presentation of it. I assume that all those interested, and I hope that all are interested, will read it at their own convenience. We believe that some schemes are presented in this report by which much could be accomplished. I will simply present, Mr. President, the recommendations of the Publicity Committee.

(Reads recommendations on page 198.)

I would like to refer to one or two things in this connection. Of course, you will all realize that the convention affords the Advertising Section an opportunity to procure the material for putting our story over and giving it to the public. You will be interested in knowing that this week in Chicago there are 19 conventions, and in spite of that we have been able to get real publicity. We have gotten this week something in excess of 4,000 inches in the papers in Chicago. I think that speaks for itself of the activities and clever handling of the Director of the Section. I wish to say, Mr. President, that the Association is very fortunate in having such a man.

PRESIDENT TODD:- You have heard the report of the Committee on Publicity. Is there any discussion of this report? If not, we will take up the report of the Committee of One Hundred, of which committee Mr. Guy E. Tripp, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, New York City, is Chairman. In the absence of Mr. Tripp, the report will be presented by Mr. Arthur W. Brady.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE OF ONE HUNDRED To the American Electric Railway Association:

GENTLEMEN-Your Committee of One Hundred desires to report that its work of general publicity in the past has been fully appreciated · by those interested in electric railways as the call for funds to carry on the work in the past year met a very generous response and over $45,000 was pledged and collected for carrying on the work; $14,797.19 still remains in the treasury against which there are August expenses of about $2,500.
