Sloop 'Decatur, ' bound for the west coast of Africa, where he staid 22 months; this last cruise being for the suppression of the slave trade, and under the command of Commodore M. C. Perry." "In the meantime Mr. Rathbone's parents had removed from New Jersey to Parkersburg, W. Va., and he came there to visit them. At the expiration of his leave of absence, he was ordered to the line of Battleship 'Ohio, ' at Boston, and in about two months, to the Sloop of War 'Marion, ' bound for the African coast. He resigned from this, and went into the merchant marine. While in the merchant service, he married Miss Mahala J. Grant, of Rockland, Maine, and they had nine children, one of whom, Sam'l B. Jr., is at present 1899 Sheriff of Wirt Co., W. Va." "Samuel B. Sr., remained in the merchant service until 1859, and then came to Burning Springs, W. Va., and engaged in the oil business, until the breaking out of the Civil War in 1861, when he volunteered to serve in Co. C 1st W. Va. Cavalry, remaining there until the latter part of that year, when he returned to New Jersey with his family. In March 1862, he was appointed Master in the Naval Service, and attached to the Gun Boat 'Penguin, ' of the East Gulf Squadron. In March 1863, on account of a serious disability he resigned. In 1872, Capt. Rathbone again returned to Wirt Co., and since then has been one of its most influential citizens, being engaged in the steam-boat, farming, and milling business at different times.
