COMPETITIVE CLASS

Competitive examinations for positions in the civil service of the city of Poughkeepsie shall be held for the following positions, and such other positions not otherwise classified, as the Municipal Civil Service Commission, by unanimous vote, may determine: City clerk.

Clerk of board of public works.

Janitor.

Attendance officer or truant officer.

Engineer (stationary).

Assistant engineer (stationary).

Superintendent of school buildings and repairs.

Superintendent of parks.

Fireman at City Hall.

Fireman at pumping station.

Librarian.

Assistant librarian.

Sergeant.

Patrolman.

Matron.

Inspector of meters and service.

Inspector of plumbing.

Foreman,

Tapper.

Superintendent of streets.

Watchman.

Inspector of buildings.

Second. The labor class shall include all persons employed as

laborers or day workmen.

AMENDMENTS TO CITY CIVIL SERVICE RULES

APPROVED

The following resolution was adopted by the Municipal Civil Service Commission July 15, 1909, and approved by the Mayor: Resolved, That the schedule of positions in the exempt class of the classified service be amended as follows:

Under the words "department of public safety" by adding the words "superintendent of the bureau of buildings," so that the classification of exempt positions in the department of public safety shall read as follows:

Department of public safety:

One deputy commissioner.
The health officer.

Deputy health officer.

Superintendent of bureau of buildings.

The police surgeon.

The fire surgeon.

The following resolution was adopted by the Municipal Civil Service Commission July 15, 1909, and approved by the Mayor: Resolved, That the position of scaler of weights and measures be placed in the unclassified service of the city of Albany and that the schedule of positions in the unclassified service be amended to read as follows:

UNCLASSIFIED SERVICE

First.- Officers elected by the people:

Mayor.

Recorder.

Comptroller.

Treasurer.

President of the common council.

Aldermen.

Assessors.

Justices of the city court.

Justices of the police court.

Second. The head or heads of any department of the city government:

Officers appointed by the mayor:

Corporation counsel.

Commissioner of public works.

Commissioner of public safety.

Commissioner of charities and corrections.

City engineer.

School commissioners.

Civil service commissioners.

Examining board of plumbers.

Inspector of markets.

Commissioner of deeds.

Bell ringers.

Scaler of weights and measures.

Third. Persons employed in or who seek to enter the public service as superintendents, principals or teachers under the educational department of the city; namely, the superintendent, principals and teachers employed by the board of education.

The following resolutions were adopted by the Municipal Civil Service Commission November 3, 1909, and approved by the Mayor November 9, 1909:

Resolved, That the schedule of positions in the competitive class in the police department be amended to read as follows: Police department:

Captains.
Sergeants.

Patrolmen.

First Class.- Persons who have been regularly employed as patrolmen for a period of more than two years.

Second Class. Persons who have been regularly employed as patrolmen for a period of more than one year and less than two years.

Third Class.- Persons who have been regularly employed as patrolmen for a period of less than one year.

Supernumary Class.- Persons appointed to the position of patrolmen but not regularly employed, being subject to special detail and employment and receiving therefor a per diem compensation.

Matron.

Patrol driver.
Stableman.

Resolved, That the schedule of positions in the classified service in the fire department be amended to read as follows:

Fire department:

Permanent assistant fire chief.

Call assistant fire chief.

Clerk.

Permanent foreman.

Permanent assistant foreman.

Supervising engineer of steamers.

Engineer of steamer.

Fireman of steamer.

Driver.

Tillerman.

Permanent hoseman.

First Class.- Persons who have been regularly employed as permanent hosemen for a period of more than two years.

Second Class.- Persons who have been regularly employed as permanent hosemen for a period of more than one and less than two years.

Third Class.- Persons who have been regularly employed as permanent hosemen for a period of less than one year.

Call hoseman.

Superintendent of hose and supply depot.

Assistant superintendent of hose and supply depot.
Superintendent of fire alarm.

Assistant superintendent of fire alarm.
