SEC. 6. CHAPTER XXXVIII.

An Act to aid and facilitate the construction of a line of Magnetic Telegraph from Saint Paul to the northern boundary of the State.

PREAMBLE.

SECTION 1. Northwestern Telegraph Company authorized to construct a telegraph line to connect with the line being constructed through the British Possessions-within what time to commence and when to be completed.

2. When act to take effect.

Whereas, "The Northwestern Telegraph Company," a corporation duly created and existing by and under the laws of the State of Wisconsin, and now owning and operating all the existing lines of telegraph in the States of Wisconsin and Minnesota, proposes to extend one of their main lines from Saint Paul along the route of the Saint Paul and Pacific Railroad via St.

Cloud to the northern boundary of the State, at or near Pembina, there to connect with a telegraph line about being constructed through the British Possessions to the Pacific Ocean, being a part of the great International Telegraph line now in process of construction by the way of Behring's Straits, under the authority and patronage of the Russian, American and British Governments; and

Whereas, A great portion of the said route in this State is through an uninhabited country from which little or no business will be derived for many years, and the expense of constructing, maintaining and operating said line will be very great; and

Whereas, The construction, maintenance and operation of such a line of telegraph will be of great benefit to this State. Therefore

SEC. 2. This act is hereby declared a public act and shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER XXXIX.

An Act to continue the Geological Survey of the mine-
ral lands of the North Shore of Lake Superior and
other mineral districts within the limits of this State
and to appropriate money therefor.

SECTION 1. Governor authorized to appoint a suitable person to continue the survey of the North
Shore of Lake Superior.

2. To take oath for faithful performance of duty-to make report to Governor-what to

4. When act to take effect.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota:

SECTION 1. That the Governor be and he is hereby authorized and empowered to appoint some suitable person to continue the Geological Survey of the mineral lands of the north shore of Lake Superior, lying in the State of Minnesota, and also other mineral bearing districts within the limits of this State.

SEC. 2. Such person so appointed shall before entering upon his duties under the provisions of this act, take and subscribe an oath to diligently and faithfully discharge such duties to the best of his ability. And he shall proceed at as early a day as practicable to continue such survey under the direction of the Governor. He shall make analysis of metal-bearing rocks that may be obtained during such survey, to the end that the commercial value thereof may be ascertained, and he

shall report the same to the Governor on or before the first day of January A. D. eighteen hundred and sixtysix. He shall also make and report sectional maps showing the location of minerals examined and analysed, and as far as in his power, report upon the extent of the coal fields on the waters of the Big Cottonwood River, and the extent of such other mineral deposites as he may find, and such report shall be transmitted by the Governor to the Legislature of the State.
