CONSTABLE'S OATH.

I, A.B., do swear that I will well and truly serve Our Sovereign Lady the Queen in the office of Constable for the Colony of Tasmania, and that I will, to the best of my power, without favour or affection, malice or ill-will, cause the peace to be kept and preserved, and prevent all offences against the persons and properties of Her Majesty's subjects; and that while I continue to hold the said office I will, to the best of my ability, skill, and knowledge, discharge all the duties thereof faithfully according to law. So help me God.

AN ACT to provide for the Maintenance of A.D. 1898. the Police Force of Tasmania.

BE it enacted by His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania, by and

with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly, in Parliament assembled, as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as "The Police Rate Act, 1898."

Short title.

2 The Acts set forth in the Schedule, to the extent therein men- Repeal. tioned, are hereby repealed. Provided that such repeal shall not affect the collection and recovery of any Police Rate levied and due at the time of the commencement of this Act.

3 For the purpose of raising a sum of money in aid of the main- Governor in tenance of the Police Force of Tasmania, the Governor in Council Council may levy may make and levy in and for the year One thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine, and in the next succeeding year, a Rate of Four Pence in the Pound upon the annual value of property throughout Tasmania, as shown by the Assessment and Valuation Rolls in force for the City of Hobart and the City of Launceston, and for every Rural Municipality and every Municipal District in Tasmania; and all the provisions of The Rural Police Rate Act and of "The Rural Police Rate Act, No. 6," shall apply to the making, collecting, and recoverv of such Rate as aforesaid.

4 The Rate to be levied under this Act shall be payable on the First day of April in each year.

5 This Act, and The Rural Police Rate Act, and every Act altering or amending the last-mentioned Act, except in so far as the same may be altered by this Act, shall be read and construed together as one Act.

6 This Act shall commence and come into operation on the First day of January, One thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine.

AN ACT to continue certain provisions of A.D. 1898 "The Income Tax Act, 1894," and to amend

the same.

WHEREAS it is desirable to continue "The Income Tax Act, PREAMBLE.?

1894," so far as it relates to a Tax upon the Income of Companies, and to further amend it in the several particulars hereinafter mentioned:

Be it therefore enacted by His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly, in Parliament assembled, as follows:
