AN ACT to alter the Duties of Customs A.D. 1898. upon Cattle and Sheep and Carcase Meat.

[31 August, 1898.]

WHEREAS, owing to recent dry Seasons there is a scarcity of Fat PREAMBLE,

Stock in Tasmania, and it is desirable to reduce the Duty upon Cattle

and Sheep and Carcase Meat, as hereinafter provided :

Be it therefore enacted by His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and

House of Assembly, in Parliament assembled, as follows:—

And upon the expiration of this Act the Customs Duties imposed by "The Customs Duties Act, 1894," upon the animals and articles set forth in the Schedule hereto, shall be levied, collected, and paid as if this Act had not been passed.

3 "The Customs Act, 1897," shall be deemed and taken to be incorporated herewith.

WHEREAS it is expedient to alter the Duties of Customs:

Be it therefore enacted by His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly, in Parliament assembled, as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as "The Customs Duties Act, 1898."

A.D. 1898.

PREAMBLE.

Short title.

2 This Act shall come into force and take effect on the First day of Date of Act. January, 1899.

3 The Act set forth in the Schedule (1.), to the extent therein Repeal. referred to, is hereby repealed, except as to anything duly done before the First day of January, One thousand eight hundred and ninetynine, and except as to the collection and recovery of any arrears of any Duty payable under the said Act, and except so far as may be necessary for the purpose of supporting or continuing any proceeding heretofore taken or to be taken after the date on which this Act comes into operation; and all things done under the authority or in pursuance of the Act hereby repealed shall nevertheless be valid and effectual.

4-(1.) On and after the First day of January, One thousand Duties on certain eight hundred and ninety-nine, there shall be raised, levied, collected, goods. and paid upon the importation into Tasmania of the several articles

mentioned in the Schedule (2.) to this Act the several Duties therein set forth.

(2.) All such articles in any bonding warehouse on and after the First day of January, One thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine, or entered to be landed on or after that day, shall be deemed to have been imported within the meaning of this Act, and shall be subject and liable to the Duties hereby imposed.

5 On and after the day on which this Act comes into operation, the articles included in the Table of Exemptions from all Duties set forth in the Schedule (3.) shall be exempt from the payment of any Duties

levied under this Act.

6 Where it is provided that any article is admitted free of duty, or at a reduced duty, when imported to be used for any specified purpose, the Collector may require the importer to make a declaration before him that such article will be used only for the purpose so specified.

7 "The Customs Act, 1897," and this Act shall be read and construed together as one and the same Act.

in any quantity of not less than one ton at any one time
by manufacturers to be used in their own factories, for
each gallon containing not more than thirty-three per
cent. of absolute Acid ....
