obligations under which Thou hast laid me, by making me a partaker of the rich and precious blessings of the gospel dispensation -for the glorious promises and assurances which it contains-for the powerful encouragements it holds out to the practice of all holiness, piety, and virtue-and for the exalted hopes it enables us to entertain of the pardon of our sins upon sincere repentance, and of a better state of existence to succeed the present.

When I review the past years of life, I cannot but discern many instances in which I have both done that which Thou hast forbidden, and neglected to perform what Thou hast commanded. My inferior appetites and passions have not always been under due controul, and outward circumstances have had more influence over me than they ought to have had over a rational being, and one who had received the glad tidings of salvation from the lips of Jesus Christ and his apostles.

I acknowledge my unworthiness unto Thee with a penitent concern that I have not been more upon my guard, nor walked with more circumspection before Thee. I beseech Thee of thy eternal mercy not to

enter into judgment with thy servant, nor to deal with me as my folly and iniquity have deserved. Increase my power to resist every wrong inclination, and to shun the snares into which I have before fallen. Enable me to walk at all times uprightly before Thee, and to preserve myself unspotted from the pollutions of the wicked and thoughtless part of mankind.

These my imperfect addresses I implore thy gracious acceptance of, for thy infinite mercy's sake; and to Thee, the Lord God Almighty the merciful Parent of the universe! I would solemnly and devoutly ascribe every possible honour, and praise the most exalted and unceasing.--Amen.

TWENTY-FOURTH ADDRESS.

O THOU who art supreme over all, and possessed of all possible perfection and excellence! the infinite Majesty of the world! Thou hast made me in thy own image to contemplate thy works and to admire and adore the superlative excellence of thy divine nature. I desire to bow down before Thee with the profoundest reverence and humility, and to express the wants and wishes of my soul before the throne of thy mercy.

Thy almighty voice first called me into being, and thy hands placed me in this part of thy glorious works. Thou hast nourished and sustained me from the moment I drew the breath of life to the present moment. Thou hast enabled me to escape the evils from which I have been spared. Thou hast poured down upon me the riches of thy bounty, and hast given me the greatest cause to call upon myself and all that is within met to bless and praise, to magnify and extol thy holy name.

I desire to thank thee for the wise and useful frame of my body; and more especially

for those noble faculties of the mind by which I am enabled to admire the beauty of thy works and the wonderful order of thy providence; aud to attain to the knowledge and love of Thee, the Creator of the world and the author of all good.

I thank Thee that Thou hast implanted in me a sense of good and evil, and enabled me to possess and exercise the amiable affections of benevolence and compassion, leading me by these means to the admiration and love of goodness, and to the enjoyment of that happiness which arises. from the practice of virtue and true religion.

I bless thy holy name that Thou hast

not confined thy goodness to the present world, but hast awakened in me the pleasing hope of immortality; and by the various methods of thy providence and grace, art training me up for heaven and everlasting life. Above all I praise Thee for the rich display of thy mercy in the dispensation of the gospel by Jesus Christ our Lord, and that Thou wast pleased to raise him up to bless mankind, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of sin to the worship and obedience of Thee, the true and living God.

Have mercy upon the works of thy hand. Forgive me every sin I have been guilty of upon the gracious terms of unfeigned repentance and reformation. Enable me to correct, I beseech Thee, whatever is amiss in my temper and conduct, and cause me to delight in the practice of every thing virtuous and good. Enlighten my mind with true wisdom that I may have pure and worthy apprehensions of thy nature and providence, and a right understanding of that religion which is acceptable to God and recommended to me in the gospel of thy son Jesus Christ.

May I evermore discern, approve, and practise the things that are excellent. May my heart be endued with every good and pious disposition, so that all the great truths of religion may have a powerful and habitual influence in rectifying and amending the disorders of my life, that I may at all times reverence thy authority-look up to Thee with satisfaction and joy as the giver of all good-love Thee with my whole heart--and delight in thy testimonies. 0 that I may be truly thankful for thy numerous and undeserved mercies-may confide in thy all-gracious providence
