exhibits to our sight and contemplation. May I, and every one that is capable of surveying it, pay a superior, a voluntary and rational homage unto thee.

May I ever cultivate such just and worthy apprehensions of thee, as shall engage my best affections, and dispose me, upon every proper occasion, to express my faith and hope and trust in thee; and to pour out my heart before thee, in the most grateful acknowledgments of thy goodness, and humble requests for the continuance of thy favour.

May that kingdom, which thou hast established by our Saviour, be enlarged throughout the earth. May the sun of righteousness arise, and shine with irresistible light and glory upon. all mankind; and scatter those clouds of ignorance, error, and superstition, in which they are so generally and so deeply involved; that all men may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent; that they may be fully acquainted with those laws, which will make them wise unto salvation; together with their most weighty and awful enforcements. And may all we, who enjoy

this light, feel the vital power and efficacy of it on our hearts; and by humble, unaffected piety to thee, brotherly affection to one another, and the most extensive goodness to mankind, contribute to the universal spread of a religion so excellent, so truly divine.

May we all be effectually supported and assisted by thee, O God! in the exertion of our best abilities in thy service, that others may be influenced by our examples, not only to receive, but to obey thy commands; that men may universally comply with the true spirit and design of Christianity, and thy will may be done on earth, as it is done in heaven. And, O thou great and wise and good governor of the world! who orderest and disposest all things according to the immutable and best purposes of thy own will, grant, that I and all others may humbly resign ourselves to thy all-wise disposals; cheerfully submit to all those difficulties and inconveniencies which thou, in infinite wisdom, art pleased to allot us, or to permit to fall upon us; and that we may thankfully acknowledge thy fatherly care and providence, in every station and circumstance of life.

To thy unexhausted bounty and benevolence, most gracious Father! I am indebted for the supply of all my wants; to thee, therefore, I address my humble supplications for the continuance of all those things which I daily stand in need of, in order to my comfortable support and subsistence in this world. May thy blessing attend my lawful and honourable endeavours for this purpose. If, through thy indulgent providence, I abound in temporal good things, may I kindly and cheerfully communicate to the relief of the poor and the distressed, as an inadequate acknowledgment of thy favour and kindness to myself.

May a true sense of every act of disobedience affect me with the most ingenuous and unfeigned sorrow for my past conduct, so far as it has been contrary to thy most righteous laws; and may my repentance be acceptablein thy sight, and my sins be forgiven, even as I hope I can sincerely say, that I do forgive all that have offended or trespassed against me; and that I am ready to discharge all offices of friendship and kindness towards all my fellow-creatures.

And may I never more return again to folly, nor indulge myself in any dispositions towards it. But may thy all-sufficient aid, may the wise and excellent laws, the kind admonitions, the great and noble encouragements, which thou hast given me, and the glorious and divine examples which thou hast set before me, effectually arm me against all the powers of sin, and render me superior to all the temptations of the world. That so I may be happily delivered from those innumerable evils and mischiefs, to which folly, vice and wickedness of every kind will inevita bly expose me, and enjoy that peace and satisfaction of mind, which arises from a sense of thy approbation, and a prospect of that glorious world which is promised to thy faithful and obedient children in the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord, who has instructed us to offer these petitions to thee, our heavenly Father; to whom I would ascribe all praise, glory, and dominion, both now and for ever. Amen.

THURSDAY EVENING.

MOST glorious Jehovah! thou art the only living and true God. From thee all other beings, whatever be their rank or condition,

derive their existence, and on thee depend for the continuance of it. All nature is thy workmanship; all its laws are established by thee; all its parts are ever fulfilling thy great and good designs. The thought, that thy dominion is universal and eternal, fills my mind with sacred confidence and joy.

I thank thee, that thou hast assigned me a place among thy rational offspring, and exhibited to my admiring view illustrious displays of thy adorable perfections. Thou hast bestowed on me the capacity, with which I am endowed, of beholding, with reverence and delight, numberless indications of thy constant superintendence over thy works, and of partaking, with conscious pleasure, of the happy effects of thy wise and benevolent administration. To thee I gratefully ascribe the preservation of my powers of thinking, acting, and enjoying, together with an exemption from so many of the evils, and a continued supply of so many of the comforts of life. The events of another day have afforded me fresh evidence of thy fatherly goodness. Condescend, O gracious Author of all good, to accept my evening tribute of unfeigned and fervent thanks. giving for all the benefits, with which my
