PREFACE.

THE editor's object in preparing this book was to furnish a complete edition of the statutory laws of the State of Illinois, of a general character, in force on January 1, 1880, in a convenient form for use.

In its preparation, the same general plan, adopted by the Revisers in 1874, has been carefully followed.

All of the laws enacted since the Revision of 1874, amendatory of the Revised Statutes, as well as of the laws-not revised - published in connection therewith, will be found in their appropriate places throughout the work, followed by references to the time of approval and when they went into effect. The original paging is retained in the margin.

The General Laws enacted in 1875, 1877 and 1879, other than those amendatory of the Revised Statutes of 1874, are distributed in connection with the Revised Statutes, in the manner most convenient for reference, and are distinguished by a prefixed to each section.

This edition contains an exact reprint of the Revision of 1874 (except that certain typographical errors and citations have been corrected), with such alterations only as have been made by the General Assembly and the decisions of the Supreme Court, together with all of the General Laws enacted since.

The act in relation to Texas and Cherokee cattle has been omitted, in consequence of a decision of the Supreme Court declaring it unconsti tutional, announced just before going to press.

Copious citations of the decisions of the courts of this State will be found throughout the work. These citations are brought down to the time of going to press, and include the 89th Illinois Reports. The cases
