EXPRESS COMPANIES.

What express companies run on your road, and on what terms and what conditions as to rates, etc.; what kind of business is done by them, and do you take their freights at the depot or at the office of such express company? The American Express Company in Minnesota. They make their own rates and pay this company a per diem rate. They do a regular express business, and we take their freight at the depot. It is handled by their own employes. Vol. V-42.

TRANSPORTATION COMPANIES.

What freight and transportation companies run on your road, and on what terms and on what conditions as to rates, use of track, machinery, repairs of cars, etc.; do they use the cars of your company, or those furnished by themselves, and are their cars or their freight given any preference in speed or order of transportation, and if so, in what particular? The cars of all transportation companies are allowed to run over this road. This company pays the usual cent per mile for use of same. No preference is given the cars or freight of any company.

What new railroad enterprises under way, reeently completed or purchased? None in Minnesota.

SLEEPING CARS.

Do sleeping, parlor or dining room cars run on your road, and if so, on what terms do they run, by whom are they owned, and what charges are made in addition to regular passenger rates? The Pullman Palace Car Company runs sleeping cars on this company's lines between Minneapolis and Elroy, St. Paul and Sioux City, and Minneapolis and Duluth. The Wagner Sleeping Car Company also runs cars between Minneapolis and Elroy, same as, and alternately with the cars of the Pullman Company between Elroy and Duluth. These companies make their own rates for sleeping accommodations. Parlor cars owned by this company are run between Minneapolis and Ashland, rates based on distance traveled. Dining cars owned by this company are run on the main lines, rate seventy-five cents per meal. What is the total amount paid by your company to palace or sleeping car companies, to what companies, and the amount paid to each? Please state fully the arrangement by which these cars are run on your road, the terms and who receives the earnings. Total amount paid the Pullman Palace Car Company, $55,462.96. This company pays the Pullman company for the use of their

cars.

UNITED STATES MAIL IN MINNESOTA.

What is the compensation paid you by the United States government for the transportation of its mails, and on what terms of service? Rates fixed by the Postoffice Department, based on weight of mails, taken every four years. What amount have you paid for receiving and delivering mail to and from stations on your road? Not kept.

How many annual passes were issued over your lines within the state during year ending June 30, 1888? This company had outstanding June 30, 2,630 annual passes, good over the whole line and not necessarily used within this state.

How many trip passes were issued over same lines during same time? It is impossible for us to give this information.

How many miles traveled upon free transportation within this state during the year? This company has never kept any record of the miles traveled on free transportation, and we are therefore unable to answer this question.
