To the President and Directors of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railway Company,

GENTLEMEN: Blanks for the annual return of your corporation, to this board, as required by chapter 188, laws of the twenty-fourth session of the legislature, are herewith transmitted.

The value of the returns, not only to the legislature and the public, but to the corporations themselves, depends upon their accuracy and completeness. The commissioners would therefore urge upon the managers of the roads that they take special pains to make their returns as perfect as possible, so that they may be more valuable for the purpose of comparison, and that all deductions from them may be reliable.

Every question asked has been for a specific purpose. answered, please so state, and give the reason. It is too often the case that the questions are passed by without any effort to understand or answer them.

You are respectfully reminded that the law requires the annual return to be made on or before the first day of September, under a penalty of not less than one hundred dollars, or more than $5,000 for each and every neglect of ten days. ATTEST:

HISTORY OF ORGANIZATION, CONSTRUCTION, LEASING AND CONSOLIDATION OF LINES NOW OPERATED BY YOU, AND STATUTES AUTHORIZING THE SAME.*

Date of charter, June 22, 1876.

Is the charter a special act of the legislature, or was the company incorporated under the General Laws of the state? June 22, 1876. The property of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Minnesota Railway Company was sold for $170,000, and bid in by a committee appointed by the bondholders, who organized on the above date a new company under its present name. Has any change been made in the mileage of your road in this state during the past year; if so, give a detailed statement showing what changes have been made and how the present mileage is made up? A running arrangement with the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway Company has been made by which our trains will use their track from Madison Junction to Forest City, at an yearly rental of $3,150. This agreement expires August, 1892. Length of track about 7.22 miles.

*Give a brief description of all lines operated, stating which are owned by the company and what lines or branches are leased from other companies.
