EGYPTIANS' ANCIENT HISTORY.

From the Origin of the Egyptian Monarchy up to the Conquest of this Country by Cambyses (525). Religion-GovernmentArts Monuments.

It is firmly believed that the posterity of Ham and that of Misraim first populated Egypt.

The Ethiopians, already advanced in civilization, established colonies and formed the states of Thebes, Elephantine, Heraclius of Thin or This, in Upper Egypt, and in Lower Egypt the states of Memphis, Mendes, and of Thanis, &c. The dynasty of Thebes was the most ancient and powerful. The Ethiopians were composed of two castes, the priests and the warriors. The ancient inhabitants composed the inferior classes. The commencement of the history of Egypt is obscure, owing to the fables with which it was enveloped. The priests

reigned under the title of divinities. The theocratic government was succeeded by the monarchy. The first king of whom we have any decided knowledge is Menes, who dried up the lower part of Egypt, and rendered it habitable, having taken the trouble to cut trenches all over the country. He is considered as the propagator of idolatry, having established at Memphis the adoration of Vulcan or of fire, also that of the sun, the earth, and stars. Fifty kings of this race reigned after him, whose names even are unknown. A horde of savages, without doubt come from Arabia, then governed Egypt for more than five centuries, under the name of the Shepherd Kings, or Hyksos. These strangers were at last put to flight, and the Egyptians were once more governed by kings of their own nation. We observe amongst the list of these princes, Thothmosis, first king of the twelfth dynasty, who reunited Egypt under one king, after having chased the Arabs; Joseph was his minister. We observe next the infamous Busiris, who immolated all the strangers who came into his dominions; the powerful Osymandyas, celebrated for his marvellous monuments; he founded the first library, to which he gave the name of Pharmacea, or remedy for the soul. Nicotris, celebrated for her tomb and her library, was as cruel as the greater part of her predecessors; she built the third pyramid. Moris, who rendered himself useful to his countrymen in making the famous lake which bears his name. Amenophis, who caused the Hebrews to leave Egypt, after having oppressed them with hard labour; he was, it is supposed, the father of Sesostris, the hero of Egypt, whom he wanted to turn into a conqueror. All the children born the same day as Sesostris were brought up with great care, to accustom them, as well as the young prince, to a rough and laborious life.

Sesostris (1645), at the head of an immense army, invaded Asia by sea and land, as far as the Ganges, took or pillaged thousands of towns and villages, and penetrated as far as Europe. He brought back to his own country immense riches, and in his suite many unfortunate prisoners. After this mad and destructive expedition, which had lasted nine years, he became wiser and better, paid off his soldiers and recompensed them, undertook immense buildings, fortified his frontiers with a long wall, cut out canals from Memphis to the sea, which served, on the one side, to render the country less accessible to the enemy, and, on the other hand, to facilitate commerce. In his old age
