An act for regulating the manufacture and sale of Bread, [Passed March 7, 1801.]

[1] SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled and by the authority of the same, That from and after the first day of April next, all soft bread, whether baked in loaves or biscuit, which shall be exposed to sale by any Baker, or other person, shall be sold by weight.

[2] SEC. 2. Be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That all soft biscuit, which shall hereafter be offered for sale, shall weigh four or eight ounces, and be marked with the initial of the Baker's christian name, and his surname at length, and the weight of the biscuit; and all loaves of soft bread, shall be of some one of the following weights, viz: one pound, two, three or four pounds, and be marked with the weight of the loaf, and the maker's name; and if any Baker or other person, shall offer or expose to sale, any soft bread or biscuit, which shall not severally be marked, and conform to one of the weights before mentioned, every such person, so offending, shall forfeit and pay the sum of eight dollars, to be recovered by action of debt before any Justice of the peace within and for the County where such offence shall happen, by any person who shall sue for the same, together with legal costs; one half of the penalty aforesaid, to be for the use of the person who prosecutes, and the other half to the use of the poor of the town, where such offence may be committed.

[3] SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That all laws heretofore made for regulating the assize of bread, be, and hereby are repealed, from and after the first day of April next, excepting so far as relates to the recovery of any forfeiture, fine or penalty incurred, or which may be incurred previous to that time, by a breach of any of said Laws.

An Act establishing a Free Bridge in the City of Boston. [Passed March 4, 1826.]

[The first section establishes the corporation.]

[1] SECT. 2. Be it further enacted, That said corporation be, and they hereby are authorized and empowered to build and construct, or cause to be built and constructed, a free bridge, with one or more suitable and sufficient draws, across the water and over the channel, in or near a direction in a straight line from or near Sea Street, in Boston, to the newly made land at South Boston, and nearly in the direction of the Dorchester Turnpike, and to erect a wharf or pier on each side of said bridge, near said draws, for the accommodation of vessels passing through said bridge; such bridge and wharves to be built in such manner as the city government of Boston shall approve Provided, however, that said corporation shall be holden to make compensation to any person, or corporation, whose land shall be appropriated to the use of said bridge.

[2] SECT. 3. Be it further enacted, That no toll or duty shall ever be exacted or paid, for any travel over said bridge, or passing the draws of the same; and said corporation shall

always be held liable to keep said bridge and draws in g repair, and to raise the draw of said bridge, and afford all cessary and proper accommodation to vessels that have oc sion to pass the same by night or by day, and shall keep s bridge sufficiently lighted; and if any vessel is unreasona delayed or hindered in passing said draw, by the negligence said corporation or their agents, in discharging the duties e joined on them by this act, the owners or commanders of su vessels shall recover reasonable damage therefor, of said co poration, in an action on the case, before any court proper try the same; and if the said corporation shall not, within thr years from the passing of this act, locate, construct, build, an complete said bridge, agreeably to the provisions of this ad then this act shall be null and void: Provided, that whenev the city government of Boston shall assume the care and ob gations of keeping said bridge in repair, lighting the same, an providing facilities for raising said draw or draws, as aforesai then the obligations hereby imposed on said corporation to th effect, shall be annulled, and the same shall devolve on th said city government; in which case the damages mentione in this section, shall be sued for, before any court proper t try the same, in either of the counties of Middlesex or Essex But unless the city government shall assume the care and ob ligations aforesaid, the said corporation, before commencing the building of said bridge, shall furnish adequate security, to the satisfaction of the said city government, for the due per formance of the obligations and duties imposed on said corporation by the provisions of this act.

[The fourth section provides for the mode of recovery of compensation for land taken.]

[3] SECT. 5. Be it further enacted, That if the city government of Boston shall, within three months from the passing of this act, determine, by a concurrent vote of both branches of the said city government, to erect said bridge, they shall be at liberty so to do, on the same terms and conditions as said Boston Free Bridge Corporation are otherwise, by the provisions of this act, authorized to erect the same.

[4] SECT. 6. Be it further enacted, That an act passed on the twenty-fifth day of February, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-five, entitled an Act establishing a free bridge in the city of Boston, be, and the same is hereby repealed.

An Act in addition to an Act entitled "An Act establishing a Free Bridge in the City of Boston."

[Passed March 18, 1831.]

[5] SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That the city of Boston be, and hereby is authorized to construct and maintain such wharves or piers, on either or both sides of the Free Bridge mentioned in the act to which this is in addition, as shall be necessary for the preservation and safety of said bridge, provided, however, that the said wharves or piers shall not extend in width from the sides of said bridge more than twenty-five feet.

[6] SECT. 2. Be it further enacted, That if any person shall wilfully do any injury or damage to said bridge, said wharves or piers, or shall disturb or hinder the said city in the occupation of said wharves or piers, for the purpose aforesaid, the person so offending shall forfeit and pay, for each offence, a penalty not less than fifty dollars, nor more than one hundred dollars, to the use of the Commonwealth, to be recovered by indictment, or information in any court of competent jurisdiction, and such person so offending shall be further liable to answer in damages to the city of Boston, provided, that nothing in this act shall be construed as intending to impair or affect the lawful rights of any person whatsoever.

[7] SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That whenever the wharves or piers erected, or which shall be erected by the authority of this act, shall be used or improved for any other purpose or purposes than those herein specified, all right and authority to maintain them shall cease, and be void.

An Act in addition to an Act entitled "an Act to incorporate the proprietors of Boston South Bridge."

[Passed June 23, 1833.]

[8] SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That the proprietors of the Boston South Bridge, are hereby authorized and empowered to sell, assign, and transfer to the city of Boston, the franchise and materials of said Boston South Bridge, to have and to hold the same to the said city and its successors forever. Provided, that no toll or duty shall ever be exacted or paid for any travel over said bridge, or passing the draw of the same, and the said city shall

always be held liable to keep said bridge and draw in go repair, and to raise the draw of said bridge, and afford all cessary and proper accommodation to vessels that have oce sion to pass the same by night or by day, and shall keep st bridge sufficiently lighted.

[9] SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That if on or befo the fifteenth day of September next, the said city of Bost shall not pay to the proprietors of the Boston South Brid such sun as may be agreed on between them and the city Boston, and receive a transfer or assignment of the franchi and materials of said bridge according to the provisions of t first section of this act, then and in such case the said propri tors of Boston South Bridge are hereby authorized to surrend the franchise of said bridge to this Commonwealth, at an time within six months after said fifteenth day of Septemb. next, by a formal deed of surrender duly executed and filed the office of the Secretary of this Commonwealth, and th from and after the day of such surrender, the said corporatic shall be dissolved, and exist no longer as a body corporatexcepting for the purpose of suing and being sued for recover of debts due unto or from said proprietors.

[10] SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That so much the act, to which this act is in addition, as is incompatible wit the provisions of this act, be, and the same is hereby repealed

An Act, in further addition to an Act to incorporate the Proprietors of the Boston South Bridge.

[11] SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House o Representatives, in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That, from and after the passing of this act, the proprietors of the Boston South Bridge be, and they hereby are authorized to discontinue said bridge, as a pass wayand at any time between the passing of this act, and the first day of August next, if the city of Boston, before the first day of May next, does not pay to said proprietors such sum of money as may be agreed upon by them and the said city, for a transfer and assignment of the franchise and materials of said bridge according to the first section of "an act in addition to an act, entitled an act to incorporate the proprietors of the Boston South Bridge," passed on the twenty-third day of June last,
