REMARKS ON THE Relative Value of the Cinchona Alkaloids.
The many changes in the value of Quinine during the last few years have brought the lesser Alkaloids, formerly but little regarded, into more extensive use. This is especially the case with Cinchonidia Sulph., for, while Quinidia is supposed to represent more nearly the therapeutical value of Quinia, its sale has been far less than that of Cinchonidia, perhaps owing to its higher price, and its having been less prominently placed before the Profession.
Sulphate of Cinchonidia has been steadily rising in the estimation of physicians, and, during the past year, its use has far exceeded that of any of the lesser alkaloids, and is by many practitioners regarded as equalin effects to Sulphate of Quinia. The Madras experiments, it will be remembered, gave Quinidia ninety-nine and four-tentlis; Quinia, ninety-nine, and Cinchonia, ninety-seven and seven-tenths, in each one hundred cases treated.
Decolorization and excessive crystallization of Sulphate Quinine and other Alkaloidal salts are thought to injure their medicinal value, and many practitioners, some of whom stand at the head of the profession, advocate the use of the unbleached salts, which are considered more readily assimilable. In many of our public institutions the combined alkaloids, without having undergone the process of bleaching, have been used, the Cinchonia alone being separated as of less value; this product, usually known as “Hospital Quinine," has been prescribed for many years, with the best results, in preference to the bleached Sulphate of Quinine, and there is little doubt but that the two products are equal in therapeutical value as regards tonic and anti-periodic effects.
For these reasons we have been induced to offer pills of “Hospital Quinine,” that the Profession may have an opportunity of proving the value of the opinions given above, and we will be happy to aid them by furnishing samples free of charge.
This product, “Hospital Quinine," is not a simple mixture of the Sulpbates of Cinchonidia and Quinia, but the result of the concentration and crystallization of the mother-liquors, used in successive crystallizations (usually four), in which there are carried, with the salts of Cinchonidia and Quinidia to be eliminated, a nearly equal amount of Quinia.
In presenting our “Hospital Quinine" Pills to the Medical Profession, we shall not determine the exact proportion of Quinidia and Cinchonidia, as we deem this unnecessary, but our “Hospital Quinine,"in mother-waters, will be carefully tested, and the standard raised to fifty per cent. by the addition of Sulphate of Quinine, if necessary.
We hope to be able to afford this product at nearly one-half the price of ether-tested, or pure Sulphate of Quinia, when our arrangements for the manufacture of the latter become more extensive-instead of a difference of only twenty-five cents per ounce, at which it was quoted for many years prior to December, 1877.
CINCHONA BARK ALKALOIDS.-These pills contain one-half grain each of the four Alkaloids-Quinia, Quinidia, Cinchonia, and Cinchonidia, in the form of Sulphates, and are offered to physicians as containing a definite quantity of each salt.
QUINIDIA SULPHATE, 1, 2, and 3 grains. Added to our list by request of eminent physicians, expressly for experiment.
CINCHO.NIDIA SULPHATE, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 grains. Our sales have been enormous during the last six months. The scarcity of the salt has obliged us to advance our list twentyfive per cent.
“ HOSPITAL QUININE," 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 grains. The pills are growing in favor with physicians, both for the certainty and rapidity of their action, ready solubility, and well marked effects. For tonic and anti-periodic effects, they are considered fully equal to Quinine, while far cheaper in price. SULPHATE OF QUININE DISSOLVES IN 700 PARTS OF WATER, WHILE SULPHATE OF CINHONIDIA ONLY REQUIRES 125 PARTS, AND THE LATTER SALT, IN "HOSPITAL QUININE," IS WELL KNOWN TO ASSIST THE SOLUBILITY OF THE FORMER.

Note.- Bi-Sulphate of Quinine is much more soluble than the Sulphate, the latter requiring seven hundred parts of water to dissolve it, while the Bi-Sulphate dissolves in ten parts. In ordering, wo would advise Physicians to specify Bi-Sulphate.

WE WOULD RESPECTFULLY INFORM THE PROFESSION THAT WE EMPLOY THE ONLY PROCESS IN COATING WHICH COMPLETELY COVERS THE PILL WITH GELATINE.
Among the many important formulas on our list, we have selected a few which we give below whose reputation is mainly due to the care we have exercised in selection of the crude drug and skill in manufacture. Physicians prescribing these or any of our pills will not be disappointed in results, either from the poverty of the material or degeneracy of the mass after being made up into pills. In substances of this nature it is absolutely necessary that the pills be entirely covered by the coating. Pills have been shown us covered with a wash so thin as to be no protection whatever against the action of the atmosphere; every one of these pills that we examined had a hole running from the exterior of the coating to the centre.
A single dose of our cathartic pills will prove the ready solubility of the coating. ERGOTIN ......................3 grs. COCA ERYTHROXYLON....1 gr. One of our special formulas, prepared from
