The father sat and watch'd his boy
The festal morn, my God, is come
The footsteps fall! time presses on.
The glories of our birth and state
The King of heaven his table spreads
The King was on his throne

The Lord is my Shepherd, no want shall I know
The Lord is risen indeed

The midnight moon serenely smiles

The morning flowers display their sweets
Then came from heaven a mighty angel down
Then, Death, why shouldst thou dreaded be
Then rose the choral hymn of praise
There is a fountain fill'd with blood.

There is a freshness in the air.
There is a tear that spots the cheek.
There's a gladness in the voice of youth

There's a sound of the summer coming from far
There's grandeur in the sounding storm
There stood the Patriarch amidst a scene
The rush may rise where waters flow

There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream
These are thy glorious works, Parent of good
These, as they change, Almighty Father these
These words were utter'd in a pensive mood
The spacious firmament on high
The sun is swiftly mounted high
The swift not always in the race

The wintry west extends his blast

They sin who tell us love can die

The wandering star and fleeting wind
This is the day the Lord hath made.

This is the month, and this the happy morn
This, too, I've seen, this witness'd when alone
Thou didst, O mighty God, exist
Though low my lot, my wish is won
Thou, God, art a consuming fire
Thou judge of quick and dead
Thro' all the changing scenes of life
Thy mansion is the Christian's heart
Thy throne, O God, in righteousness
To God, the only wise

[ocr errors]

To Thee, O God, my prayer ascends
To this far nook the Christian exiles fled
'Twas in my happy thoughtless youth, when we

Unaw'd by threats, unmov'd by force

Vain world, what is in thee

Wages of sin is death; the day is come
Walk in the light so shalt thou know
Was it but yesterday I heard the roar

Weep for thine offspring, childless Israel, weep
Weep not, my mother, weep not, I am blest.
Weep, weep not o'er thy children's tomb
Welcome silence! welcome peace

Welcome, sweet day of rest

Welcome thou peaceful dawn.

We sat us down by Babel's streams.

We're ill by these grammarians us'd

What! become nothing! ne'er persuade me to it
What is eternity! can ought

What is lovelier far than the spring can be

What secret hand, at morning light

What shall I render to my God

What shall we ask of God in prayer

What strange, what fearful thing hath come to pass

When all thy mercies, O my God

When first thine eyes unveil, give thy soul leave

When gathering clouds around I view

When groves, by moonlight, silence keep

When Jordan hush'd his waters still

When marshall'd on the mighty plain

When the first day-beam bless'd the sky.

When my breast labours with oppressive care

When musing sorrow weeps the past

When restless on my bed I lie.

When spring unlocks the flowers to paint the laughing soil

When through the torn sail

Where high the heavenly temple stands.

While this gay toy attracts thy sight

Whose is that sword-that voice and eye of flame

Why am I loth to leave this earthly scene

With blood-but not his own-the awful sign.

With gallant pomp, and beauteous pride

With Thee, I lay me down to sleep

With toilsome steps when I pursue.

[blocks in formation]

Yes, this was the Son of God.

Yet a few years, or days perhaps

Yet once more, and once more, awake my harp

Ye works of God, on him alone

You now must hear my voice no more
