APPLIANCES

Each house wired affords one more opportunity to sell appliances and build up the central station day load, and each household appliance furnishes one more talking point on the subject of wiring. There are many appliances sold to existing customers, such as electric washing machines, that do a great deal toward popularizing the use of electric service and are important features in wiring existing buildings. A customer using an electric washing machine and moving to an unwired house will make arrangements to again use his machine. People living in rented houses will often go to some expense to wire another's property, just to enjoy the comfort of electric service. There are on the market a great many mechanical, medical, therapeutic and photographic appliances, which are operated by electricity. The installation of service operating such devices makes the entering wedge to the further total electrification of the home.

Some Companies offer an electric flatiron as a premium on their house wiring propositions. Aside from the fact that an electric iron makes a particularly attractive premium, central stations are placing a large number of irons without any special sales effort. In some of its towns the Public Service Company of Northern Illinois, has had a sensational success by approaching the house-wiring prospects on the sale of electric irons, giving the housewife a long talk on the advantages and comforts of this everyday modern household utensil. The woman immediately remarks that she would be interested if she had electricity in her home. This plan takes the woman, who had previously displayed no interest in electric lighting, from her defensive attitude and opens a discussion on the subject of house wiring. The salesman makes a special proposition to install an outlet for the iron and also offers her the iron that she has already expressed a desire for, provided she wires her house. This was offered on contracts amounting to $24.00 or over.

The Minneapolis General Electric Company has extensively advertised a proposition giving an appliance for each prospect furnished by its present customers. In the year 1913, 722 contracts were secured, in 1914, 1108, and in 1915, 1421. The Company reports that among the most successful plans adopted for securing this business, has been the enlistment of present cus

tomers as "prospect diggers." Not long ago this idea resulted in the cleaning up of a large stock of left-over toasters and the addition of 1000 new names, mostly of women of well to do families, to the Company's wiring prospect list.
