OUTSIDE THE CHURCH.

Over the North or Principal entrance to the Church is the following inscription on a tablet over the central door :

THIS CHURCH WAS ERECTED

IN THE VESTRY.

A plain slab of white marble on a black background:-To the Memory of The Revd LUKE HESLOP, D.D. | Archdeacon of Bucks and | Rector of St. Marylebone. He died 23d June 1825 | Aged 86 Years.

A similar slab-To the Memory of | The Revd JOHN HUME SPRY, D.D., | Canon of Canterbury | and | Rector of St. Marylebone. | He died 11th November 1854 Aged 77 Years.

LOBBY ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE CHURCH.

An oval tablet of grey marble on a white background, inscribed :-This Tablet was erected By the Rector & Vestrymen of St. Marylebone | In Memory of | WILLIAM BROOK, Churchwarden, | Who after years of active service for the Parish Honoured by those who saw his conduct in public office | Beloved by those who knew his Virtues in Private Life | and lamented by all: | Died in his year of Office 1881, Dec. 29 | Aged 89 Years.

In this Lobby are also some old shelves for bread, removed no doubt from the Parish Chapel (formerly Parish Church), and bearing the following inscription :THOS VERLEY, late of this Parish Gave | Fifty Pounds, the Interest to be Given | in Twelve Penny Loaves, to the | Poor, every Sabbath day for Ever, 1692.

IN THE CHANCEL.

A brass, inscribed :-This Tablet was erected by | public subscription in loving memory of WILLIAM HODGE, | sometime Precentor and Organist of this Church, and sub-organist of | S. Paul's Cathedral, in token of regard for his high character and musical attainments; | Who died July 15th, 1895, Aged 33. | A Prize called The Hodge Memorial Prize" | was also established at the same time. (January 1896.)

Sacred to the Memory of | RACHEL, Wife of Colonel J. B. TAYLOR, | Obt 31st March, 1814, Et 40 Years.

This Tablet is erected by her affectionate Husband, | as a lasting Memorial of his respect for her inestimable worth | and exemplary virtues.

A brass tablet, inscribed:-In Memory of St. Marylebone | whose body rests in the 14th November 1819 | Died 13th March 1897.

WALPOLE EYRE GREENWELL of Cemetery at East Finchley | Born

[Above the inscription is engraved a coat of arms with motto, " Viresco."]

A monument of white and grey marble surmounted by a vase:-Erected to the Memory of GILBERT HALL, Esqre | A Native of Edinburgh; | formerly a Surgeon in the Service of the honourable the East India Company | at Calcutta ; | but late of Manchester Street, | Manchester Square; | Who died on the 20th of March 1820, Aged 58 Years, and is interred in the vault | of this Church.

Also of MARY his niece, the Wife of | Dr C. ROGERS, of the Honble East India Company's Service, | Who died on the 5th Dec 1827 | Aged 54.

[Beneath is a coat of arms.]

A white and grey marble monument :-Sacred | to the Memory of | Lieut : General WILLIAM ST LEGER, who commenced his Military Life at the Age of 16 years, in the 17th Lt Dragoons | then serving in America: | He highly distinguished himself by his gallantry in that and other Regiments, and obtained public thanks | He also served during a long and honourable | career to the latest period of health, in Europe and Asia, and after a life of unremitted exertion | in the service of his country | Departed this life on the 28th of March 1818, | in the 58th Year of his age.

A white and grey marble monument with coat of arms above inscription:Sacred to the Memory of | Sir WILLIAM FRASER, Bart, F.R.S. | One of the elder Brethren of the Trinity House | and formerly a commander in the Honble East India Company's Naval Service. He departed this Life, at his house in Bedford Square on the 13th of February 1818, in the 78th Year of his Age; | leaving a Widow | with three Sons and eleven Daughters.

A marble monument surmounted by an urn with weeping figures:-Sacred to the Memory of | EDMUND ALEXANDER HOWARD, Esquire, | Son of the late GERRARD HOWARD, Esquire, | of Frognell Hall, Hampstead, a Magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant for the County, | and a relative of the 10th Duke of Norfolk, |

who died at his house in York Place, Portman Square | on the 11th March 1827, Aged 60. | Also of | HENRIETTA MARIA CHARLOTTE HOWARD, | relict of the above, who died at her house in York Place, Portman Square | on the 27th September 1847, Aged 69. | Their Remains are in a Vault in this Church. On the urn surmounting the monument the following inscription :

A small white marble monument on a grey marble background, surmounted by a martyr's crown :-Sacred | To the memory of | ANNA MARIA | The wife of | GEORGE CARRINGTON, Esqre of | Missenden Abbey | in the | County of Bucks. | Obiit 19th August | 1829.

A window, having beneath a brass plate inscribed:-To the Glory of God this window was placed here by the Members of the St. Marylebone Guild Feb. 1, 1885.

A white marble monument surmounted by a vase :-Sacred to the memory of | BENJAMIN HOWTON, Esq | upwards of sixty years a resident | of this parish who departed this life on the 11th of March 1819 | in the 81st year of his age | much regretted by his relations | and friends. | His remains are deposited in the vault beneath.

A white marble slab-In memory of ISABELLA MARY | wife of JOHN FAIRLIE, Esqre | Born 17th March 1807, Died 23rd January 1830. | JOHN | infant son of JOHN and ISABELLA MARY FAIRLIE | Born 9th February 1828, Died 3rd January 1829. | JOHN CANTERBURY | infant son of JOHN and LOUISA FAIRLIE Born 30th May 1835, Died 13th June 1835. | ISABELLA LOUISA | Eldest daughter of JOHN and LOUISA FAIRLIE | Born 11th November 1832, Died 31st Jan. 1843. | LOUISA second wife of JOHN FAIRLIE, Esqre | Born 3rd October 1809, Died 2nd April 1843.

A small white marble monument on grey marble background :-Sacred | to the memory of CLEMENTINA | wife of | vice Adm1 Sir PULTENEY MALCOLM, K.C.B. | and daughter of the Honble | WILLIAM FULLERTON ELPHINSTONE | Born 14th April 1775 | Died Nov 19th, 1830.

Between these two last monuments a window with inscription beneath on a brass plate-In Memory of EDWARD LAMBERT of York Terrace, Regent's Park, died 4th March 1884. The gift of his Widow ANN ALDERSON LAMBERT.

White marble tablet surmounted by an urn:-Underneath | are deposited the remains of Major ARTHUR BALFOUR | Born at Ballingoy in Fifeshire 1752 | Died the 14th of November 1817. | At a very early age he entered into the service of | the East India Company in Bengal where he was much esteem'd both in public and private life | Amiable and benevolent in his disposition and of the strictest honor and integrity he was | highly respected and beloved by all who knew him | by his relations and numerous friends.

This tablet to his memory is placed by his afflicted brother.

A small white marble tablet :-Sacred | to the memory of JOSEPH FERNANDEZ MADRID envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary | from the Republic of Colombia to his Brittanic Majesty | Born February 21st, 1789 | Died June 28th, 1830. Erected by his most affectionate wife & son.

A white marble tablet surmounted by coat of arms :-Sacred | to the memory of | JOHN BEBB, Esquire of Gloucester Place, Portman Square | and Donnington Grove, Berks | Who died 27th of September 1830 | in the 76th year of his age.

Also of JANET LAURANCE BEBB widow of the above | who died the 7th of April 1850 in the 85th year of her age | deeply lamented.

Between these is a window with inscription on brass plate beneath :-In loving Memory of ROBERT STANLEY MANSEL who died in this parish March 15th, 1881, Aged 54 years.

A grey and white marble monument surmounted by an urn:-Sacred | to the memory of ROBERT POWNEY, Esqre | who departed this life the 15th of October 1817 Aged sixty-two years | Universally beloved and most deeply lamented | by his relatives and friends. | His remains are deposited in a vault beneath.

A white marble monument, at the top the word "Vivit " in a wreath :-Near this place are | deposited the remains of | MARGARET | COUNTESS OF CLONMELL | Relict of JOHN, EARL OF CLONMELL | Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. | As a wife and mother her conduct was truly admirable | Her morals were not only blameless | but exemplary | her benevolence was extensive | without ostentation | her piety sincere without superstition. | She expired on the fifth day of November | in the Year of our Lord 1829 | and in the 67th of her age.

A similar monument having beneath a coat of arms, and above "Vivit" in a wreath-In a vault | near this place are deposited the remains of | CHARLOTTE | COUNTESS OF BEAUCHAMP | only daughter of JOHN, first EARL OF CLONMELL who departed this life | 26th April 1846 | in the 58th year of her age. | JOHN REGINALD PINDAR* | third EARL OF BEAUCHAMP | husband of the above | born at Madersfield Court | Worcester | 22nd November 1783 | Died 22nd Jany 1853 | in the 70th year of his age.

Sacred to the memory of | JOHN, LORD TEIGNMOUTH | President of the British. and foreign Bible Society | From its formation to his death a period of thirty years And formerly governor general of India | who died aged 82 years on the 14th of February 1834 and of his beloved and affectionate wife | CHARLOTTE, LADY TEIGNMOUTH | who died aged 73 years on the 13th of July of the same year. | Their mortal remains are deposited in a private vault | beneath this church.

Sacred also to the memory of their children who departed this life before them | CAROLINE ISABELLA, and EMILY, who died in their infancy in 1793 ; | and whose remains are buried under the church | of Ottery St. Mary in the county of Devon and of Captain the Honourable HENRY DUNDAS SHORE | formerly Lieutenant of His Majesty's 4th Regt of Dragoon Guards | who died in the South of France whither he had repair'd | for the restoration of his health | shattered by an eastern climate | on the 20th of April 1820, aged 26 years. | A monument to his memory is erected over his grave in the Protestant cemetery of Lounmarin in the Department of Vaucluse.

Them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.-1 Thess. iv. 14. Beneath is a coat of arms, and above an open book inscribed :

And I heard a voice | from heaven saying | unto me write | Blessed are the | Dead which die in the Lord from | Henceforth yea | saith the Spirit | that they may rest | from their labours and their works | do follow them.

A plain white marble tablet on a black background:-Sacred to the Memory of Colonel HUGH HENRY MITCHELL of the 51st Regiment of Foot | who served with great gallantry and distinction in several campaigns under | The Duke of Wellington in Spain, Portugal & France. He was the son of | HUGH HENRY MITCHELL, Esqr of the County of Cork | Married 3rd July 1804 | LADY HARRIET ISABELLA ELIZABETH SOMERSET | Daughter of HENRY, 5th DUKE OF BEAUFORT | and departed this Life April 20th, 1817 | in the 47th Year of his Age | Sincerely beloved and regretted | by his Family and Friends.

A white marble tablet surmounted by a coat of arms :-Sacred to the memory of | The Honourable ELLEN MARY | The affectionate and beloved wife | of Captain EDWARD CHARLES FLETCHER of the 1st Life Guards | and youngest daughter | of JOHN, LORD TEIGNMOUTH | who died a few days after giving birth to her third child | on the 17th day of January 1835 | Aged 31 years. | Her mortal remains are deposited by the side of those of her parents in a private vault beneath this church.

Also to the memory of The Revd ROBERT ANDERSON | Born April 29th, 1792, Died March 22nd, 1843, Aged 50. | Married the honble CAROLINE D. SHORE, 3rd daughter of JOHN, LORD TEIGNMOUTH.

A plain white marble tablet, inscribed :-The mortal remains of | ISABEL | The wife of JOHN HARDY, Esq. | member of Parliament | for the Borough of Bradford | are deposited in a catacomb | under this church. She died Jany 11th, 1834, aged 51 | leaving her husband | her three sons | and eight surviving daughters | to lament the loss of a beloved wife and exemplary mother.

A white marble monument surmounted by military trophies, and having below a coat of arms:-In memory of | Lieut General JOHN GORDON | Honble East India Company's Service | Eldest Son of | The Honorable Colonel GORDON | of Aboyne | Died 26 Dec 1832, | Aged 67.

A white marble tablet on grey background surmounted by an urn:-To the memory of BENJAMIN OAKLEY, Junior | (Son of BENJAMIN OAKLEY of Tavistock Place) who died 21st November 1815 Aged 17 years. He was interred in the church of Tooting Graveney, in the county of Surrey, | Removed thence by virtue of faculty from the bishop of Winchester | and deposited in the family vault beneath this monument | on the 15th day of February 1817.

Also of FANNY OAKLEY who died 10th of February 1817 aged 11 years.

Also of BENJAMIN OAKLEY father of the above, aged 77 | born at Weobly, in Herefordshire, and died in Sloan St. April 19th, 1844 | esteemed and respected by all who knew him.

Also of HANNAH MARCY ANNA OAKLEY Relict of the above | who died Jany 20th, 1847, aged 73 years. | " Her end was peace."

BELOW NORTH GALLERY.

A white marble tablet on black background surmounted by two vases :-Sacred to the memory of LOUISA relict of GEORGE LITTLE, Esqre of Asnagh in the county of Longford, Ireland | Youngest daughter of the late WILLIAM HORNBY, Esqre | of the Hook, Hampshire, and Portman Square, London | who departed this life on 8th May 1834 after a long and painful Illness | borne with christian fortitude and resignation | Aged 63 years.

Also to the memory of JOHN HORNBY LITTLE third son of the above, | who was taken from this world after much suffering; on the 29th December 1829, aged 33 years.

This tablet is placed as a tribute of affection | by her surviving children 1835.
