our second country appointment have been thrown into a kind of two weeks' circuit, and a member of our mission preaches there once in two weeks, on Sunday. The members at these appointments have arranged for quarterly meetings, and now take up regular collections for the poor and for the support of the Gospel.

7. Ngu Kang. This is our second country appointment established during the past year. It is situated about two miles from the "Peach Farm," and is one of a cluster of small hamlets scattered among the hills. The pee at this place have received the word with gladness, and nine of them ave been admitted to baptism. These we have formed into a class, and have appointed one of their own number the leader of it. The brethren here are hearty in the cause, and we confidently look for enlargement. There are now, indeed, eight inquirers at this appointment, and we have reason to hope they are led by the Spirit to make this expression of their desire to become Christians.

BOYS' BOARDING-SCHOOL.-Rev. Otis Gibson, Principal. With ref erence to this important and promising institution, the principal, Rev. O. Gibson, reports:

"In addition to my regular share of the labors of our general work, I have given all the time and attention I could spare to the boys' boarding-school under my charge. The new school-house has been erected at an expense of $500. It contains a small cook-room, dining-room, school-room, and sixteen sleeping-rooms, each room intended to accommodate two boys. One of these rooms is used as a store and clothes room, one is occupied by the school-teacher, and one by my personal teacher, leaving accommodations for twenty-six boys. During the past year I have received four new boys into the school, and have dismissed two, one for inefficiency, and one for continued vicious conduct. The present number in attendance is fourteen.

The total current expenses from September 30, 1858, to September 30, 1859, is $350, or an average of $25, for each boy. This includes teacher's salary, cook's wages, books, stationary, beds, board, and clothing for the boys. By making wholesale purchases of rice, I have succeeded in reducing the cost of board, and some presents of east-off clothing from gentlemen of the foreign community have reduced the expense of clothing.

"The oldest boy, 'Ing Kuang,' has been received into the Church, and is, I believe, a constant and growing Christian. Two others who were andidates for baptism failed to give permanent satisfaction as to the fitness, and consequently their baptism is indefinitely postponed. In their studies, the boys have made commendable progress, and the most part have been regular and orderly. In several instance nowever, I have been obliged to resort to very severe disci

pline, and the proper use of the rod has not been without a salutary effect. Chinese boys need a master no less than American boys of the same age. The school continues to commend itself to us as an efficient auxiliary in our great work of evangelizing this strangely idola trous people.

"Brother Gibson's usually robust health was somewhat impaired during our recent hot weather, and referring to this topic, he writes: 'It was an affliction for me to be obliged to accept a discharge from regular duty, during the months of July and August, on account of my health. I am now regaining my usual strength, and rejoice in the privilege of resuming my labors with increased energy. With the exception of the two months mentioned above, I have endeavored to bear my regular share in our laborious but glorious work, striving to be "instant in season and out of season," if by any means I might, through the blessing of God, be instrumental in saving some souls for whom Christ died.""

During the year we have engraved an Illustrated Elementary Reader in Chinese, and a new Tune and Hymn Book, and have completed the engraving of the Pentateuch. We have printed 2,300 copies of our Sunday sheet, 500 copies of the Pentateuch (in one volume,) 510 Numbers, 510 Deuteronomy, 500 Illustrated Reader, 500 Matthew, 40 Acts, and 50 Tune Hymn books.

GIRLS' SEMINARY.-Temporary accommodations for this school are now provided in the small building formerly occupied by the boys' school, and the school, we trust, will soon be in successful operation. A day-school for girls was opened shortly after the arrival of our reinforcement, and was continued till it became necessary to fit up the premises for the boarding-school. We heartily commend this school to the prayers and contributions of the Church.

The late hostile collison in the Peiho, between the Chinese and the Allies, has postponed for a time the realization of the hopes suggested by the Tientsin treaties. It is not yet known in China what views the governments of France and England will take of this grave emergency in their diplomatic intercourse with China, but the general impression is that they will feel compelled to resort once more to coercive measures, and exact from the Chinese government such material guarantees for good behavior as shall put it out of the power of any future treachery to jeopardize foriegn lives and interests in China. Meanwhile it becomes all Christians to pray earnestly that God, in mercy, may change the hearts of those in high places who now "set them selves ""against the Lord and against his anointed."

OUR FOUNDLING ASYLUM has been in operation during the past year. Ten foundlings have been admitted, of whom six were alive

and doing well at the date of the asylum's late annual report. The building for the asylum we hope to put up during the present year. The subscriptions for this year's expenses of the institution are quite equal to those of last year, and we greatly rejoice in being permitted. to carry forward this benevolent enterprise. The accompanying list of subscriptions will show how cordially and liberally the foreign community here respond to our appeal on this subject.

The members of the reinforcement which arrived in Fuh Chau March 19, 1859, have all enjoyed excellent health, and have devoted themselves to their great work with zeal and faith. We commend them to the confidence and support of the Church.

In conclusion, we beg to urge upon the Board and the Church the importance of strengthening this mission, with a view to extending its operations throughout this province, and then throughout all Central China. The field is immense, and "white unto the harvest." The signs of the times are full of promise, the day of China's salvation is evidently just at hand, and as Methodists we are bound to aid in ushering in this new and glorious era for China and for the world. May God help us thoroughly to appreciate our responsibilities and resources, and then to "quit ourselves like men and be strong!"

In behalf of the mission,
