Thirteenth Annual Report of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan.

The Board of Regents of the University of Michigan, submit their thirteenth annual report under the law for the organization of the University.

The statements and reports of the committee of the State Land Office, State Treasurer, Secretary and Treasurer of the Universty and standing committees of the Board, herewith presented, fully answer the first requirement of the statute, by exhibiting "the condition of the University."

The accompanying statement of account by the Executive Committee ascertains and discloses "the amount of expenditure" and the nature thereof, during the fiscal year ending June 30th, 1850.

An increase has been made since our last report in "the number of Professors," by the appointment of Doctors Gunn, Allen and Denton, and the transfer of Professor Sager, to chairs in the Medical Department, which is now organized. The first announcement of the medical faculty herewith submitted, indicates the time fixed for the commencement of operations, and develops the plan of proceeding in that department. The whole number of Professors at this time is ten, engaged each at a salary of $333 33 per term for the time actually employed-the academic year being divided into three

terms.

By the last annual catalogue published by the faculty of arts and sciences in January last, (which is also referred to as a part of this report,) it appears that "the number of students" was, at that time, seventy-two; of which 12 were seniors, 19 juniors, 24 sophmores, and 17 freshmen. The names of the persons comprising the several classes, with an expose of the division of time, course of study, and other exercises, and a complete list of "books of instruction," are therein given.

The following tabular statement shows the estimated receipts and expenses for the ensuing year:

It is a source of great gratification to the Board, that they are at this time enabled to announce the preparation of the building and organization of the department for the reception of Medical Students. Young men of this State who have heretofore, in such large numbers, sought instruction in other institutions abroad, are now assured of at least equal advantages at home. The reproach of such annual migrations may now be wiped away-if excellent facilities for carrying out a superior plan of instruction, as this department, under the supervision of an effective corps of Professors, can offer any inducement to the Medical Student. The Board feel that it is not say. ing too much to add their belief that many of our neighboring States will send candidates to dispute with our own youth the honors of this new institution, organized nnder such flattering auspices. Chairman Ex-Committee for the Board of Regents.
