+ Magnificat. S. Luke 1. 46.

(This fhall be faid or fung after the firft Leffon in the Evening Service.)

Μ'

Y foul doth magnify the Lord: and my fpirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded: the lowlinefs of his hand-maiden. * For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me bleffed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations.

He hath fhewed ftrength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their feat: and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath fent empty away.

He remembring his mercy, hath holpen his fervant Ifrael: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his feed for ever. Glory be to the Father, &c.

As it was in the beginning, &c.

Or else this Pfalm, except it be on the Nineteenth Day of the Month.

Paraphrafe on the MAGNIFICAT.

I joyfully praise God my Saviour: becaufe, he hath deigned to fhew fuch regard to his Servant in her lowly fiation-For henceforth future Ages will pronounce me truly happy; fince he who is infinitely powerful and holy hath been pleased to bestow upon me this honour: tho his kindnefs indeed extends to perfons of every Nation and Condition that truly ferve him--He hath

wonderfully disappointed the expectations of the ambitious. He hath depreffed the proud Rulers of the Earth, and exalted the lowly in Heart.-He hath filled thofe who hunger after Righteousness with the bounties of his Grace, but the rich in Spirit he hath rejected. He hath fent forth a Saviour to Ifrael as he promised to Abraham and his Seed.

For behold from henceforth, &c. On this paffage the Church of Rome feems to have founded, in fome measure, that adoration which she pays to the Virgin. Sing unto the Lord a new fong': for he hath done marvellous things.

With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory.

The Lord declared his falvation: his righteousness hath he openly fhewed in the fight of the heathen.

He hath remembred his mercy and truth toward the house of Ifrael and all the ends of the world have feen the falvation of our God.

Shew yourfelves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands fing, rejoice, and give thanks.

Praise the Lord upon the harp: fing to the harp with a Pfalm of thanksgiving.

With trumpets alfo and fhawms: O fhew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King.

Let the Sea make a noise, and all thatt herein is the round world, and they that dwell therein.
