What faith is.

draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

CHAP. XI.

1 What faith is. 6 Without faith we cannot please God. 7 The worthy fruits thereof in the fathers of old time.

NOW faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen: 2 For by it the elders obtained good report.

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

4 By faith d Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead eyet speaketh. 5 By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

The worthy fruits of faith. 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed a to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises d offered up his only begotten

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place Ge. 12.8. which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out not knowing whither he

went.

9 By faith he sojourned in the laud of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, m the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for n a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 Through faith also P Sarah herself received strength to couceive seed, and 4 was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, t so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea-shore innumerable.

24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the first-born should touch them.

1 An exhortation to constant faith, patience, and godliness. 22 A commendation of the new testament above the old. WHEREFORE, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, a let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set be

fore us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; d who, for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3f For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, 5 lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4h Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence. shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live ?

10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

CHAP. I.

1 We are to rejoice under the cross, 5 to ask patience of God, 13 and in our trials not to impute our weakness, or sins, unto him, 19 but rather to hearken to the word, to meditate in it, and to do thereafter. 26 Otherwise men may seem, but never be truly religious.

a

JAMES, ba servant of God and

of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes dwhich are scattered abroad, greeting.

2 My brethren, count it all joy f when ye fall into divers temptations;

38 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore d lay apart all filthiness, and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, m To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, " and to keep himself unspotted from

Of governing the tongue."

23 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

CHAP. III.

1 We are not rashly or arrogantly to reprove others: 5 but rather to bridle the tongue, a little member, but a powerful instrument of much good, and great harm. 13 They who he truly wise be mild, and peaceable, without envying, and strife.

17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, " when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar ?

22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, aud by works was faith made perfect?

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that kit defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the † course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every + kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed, of t mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, m which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought

not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter!

12 Can the fig-tree, my brethren, bear olive-berries ? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
