Dr. Thomas, of Bay City, having requested the withdrawal of his name from the Committee on Nominations, the President appointed Dr. Tupper, of Bay City, to act in his stead. Dr. Brodie then offered the following resolution :

Whereas, At the last meeting of the American Medical Association at Chicago in June, 1877, charges were preferred against the Michigan State Medical Society for "irregular and unethical conduct; and

Whereas, These charges have been filed with the Judicial Council and must come up for hearing at the next meeting of the American Medical Association in Buffalo: therefore,

Resolved, That this Society do now select two of its members to act as counsel in this matter, and that it shall be their duty to be present at the approaching meeting of the American Association to defend these charges before the Judicial Council in such manner as shall seem to them best calculated to protect the interests and the good name of this Society.

On motion the preamble and resolution were adopted.

A member asked whether the counsel should be appointed by the President or elected by the Society.

The President said he preferred the Society should elect.

It was moved that the selection of the two members be referred to the Nominating Committee.

Dr. Brodie said he did not think that was the way.

The President said there was no reason in the world why the Nominating Committee could not perform that duty.

A member moved that Dr. Brodie be appointed chairman of the committee.

The President said it was as well, perhaps, to trust the election of the counsel to the delegates.

Dr. Bartholomew moved as an amendment that Dr. Brodie be appointed chairman of the committee.

The motion was carried.

Dr. Brodie moved that Dr. Hitchcock be appointed the other.

Dr. Jerome moved as a substitute that Dr. Brodie be authorized to select his own associate counsel.

Dr. Shank-From the doctor's indication in the matter I second the motion.

The motion was carried.

The President-The original motion before this Society is to refer the appointment of this counsel to the Nominating Committee, to which two amendments have been offered and adopted. What action will the Society take upon the original motion as now amended.

A member moved that it lay on the table. [Laughter.]

As a substitute it was moved and supported that Drs. Brodie and Hitchcock be declared delegates, and that they serve as counsel for the Society to defend it against the charges preferred against it in the American Medical Association.

Carried.

Dr. Brodie moved that the Society proceed to the election of President for the ensuing year.

Carried.

On motion the President appointed Dr. Parmenter and Dr. French as tellers.

Dr. Parmenter nominated for President Dr. Cox, of Battle Creek.

Dr. Thomas nominated Dr. Johnson, of Grand Rapids.
Dr. Beebe nominated Dr. Beech, of Coldwater.

Dr. Hitchcock-I am happy to support the nomination of Dr. Beech, because he is one of our oldest and most eminent physicians, and always has been an honest physician; we shall do ourselves honor to put him at our head.

Dr. Johnson-I am not a candidate for that position; I very respectfully decline to have my name used in that connection. Dr. Shurley nominated Dr. J. P. White.

Dr. White respectfully declined to be a candidate.

Dr. Shurley moved that the paper on gynaecology be read by title and referred to the committee with power to publish. Carried.

Dr. Brodie moved that all the other papers be referred to the committee with power to publish or not, except in cases where the Society had voted upon them.

The President-Let it be understood what this resolution means, that all papers referred to the Publishing Committee without specific instructions as to their disposition shall be considered as referred with power to publish.

The motion was carried.

Dr. Brodie moved that Dr. Eugene Smith be requested to read his paper on diseases of the middle ear.

The paper was read by Dr. Smith.

Dr. Brodie moved that it be referred to the Committee on Publication with instructions to publish.

Carried.

The total number of votes cast for President was 102. Dr. Cox received 83; Dr. Whelan, 2; Dr. Beech, 7; Dr. Johnson, 9; and Dr. Twiss, 1.

The President-Dr. Cox, of Battle Creek, having received a majority of the votes, is elected.

A motion that he be declared unanimously elected was carried.

Dr. Twiss then read the following charge:

To the Officers and Members of the Michigan State Medical Society:
I hereby charge the following named members of the Michigan
State Medical Society, viz.: Alonzo B. Palmer, Professor of Pathol-

ogy; Donald McLean, Professor of Surgery; Edward S. Dunster, Professor of Obstetrics, and W. J. Herdman, Demonstrator of Anatomy, now occupying these several positions in the Medical Department of the Michigan University, of a disregard and violation of a resolution passed by the American Medical Association, which reads as follows: "That the members of the medical profession who in any way aid or abet the graduation of medical students in irregular or exclusive systems of medicine are deemed thereby to violate the spirit of ethics of the American Medical Association."

E. TWISS.

The President said that under the rule the charge would go to the Judicial Council without debate.

Dr. Parmenter suggested that the words "you bet" be substituted for "aid and abet."

Dr. Brodie-I move that we proceed to the election of the three members of the Judicial council in place of Drs. Kedzie, Thomas, and Parmenter, whose terms have expired.

Carried.

Dr. Brodie nominated Drs. Parmenter, Whelan, and Snow. Dr. Jerone-I would nominate the two remaining ones, Dr. Kedzie and Dr. Thomas, as well as Dr. Parmenter. If Dr. Parmenter is continued, I propose to nominate the other two whose terms expire.

Supported.

Dr. Kedzie was nominated.

It was suggested that one be voted for at a time.

The whole number of votes cast was 90: Dr. Parmenter received 47; Dr. Kedzie, 40; Dr. Cleland, 2; Dr. Twiss, 1.

On motion of Dr. Jerome, Dr. Parmenter was declared unanimously reëlected a member of the Judicial Council. Dr Jerome I now move you that we put in nomination Dr. Kedzie as having the next highest vote.

Dr. Brodie nominated Dr. Whelan.

A ballot was then taken, Dr. Whelan receiving 42; Dr. Kedzie, 47; Dr. Snow, 1; Dr. Thomas, 3.

On motion Dr. Kedzie was declared unanimously elected. Dr. Jerome urged the name of Dr. Thomas of Bay City as the only representative in that part of the State. He had long been associated with this gentleman, and creditably, and thought there was no reason why the other two gentlemen should be reëlected and he not.

Ninety-one ballots were then cast, of which Dr. Thomas received 40; Dr. Whelan, 46; Dr. Snow, 3; Dr. Wood, 1; Dr. White, 1.

On motion Dr. Whelan was declared unanimously elected. Dr. Cox-Being elected to the office of President, I now resign my office as a member of the Judicial Council for the next two years.
