Humane and Penal Institutions.'

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Assembly, as follows:

1. Sub-section (1) of Section 1 of Chapter 59, Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1923, is amended by inserting, between the word "jails" and the word "reformatories" in the fifth line thereof, the word "lock-ups".

Sec. 2, 88. (1), 2. Sub-section (1) of Section 2 of said Chapter 59 is amended by inserting between the word "jails" and the word "and" in the fifth line thereof, the word "lock-ups".

Sec.123 amended.

Sec. 140 repealed; substituted.

CHAPTER 26.

An Act to Amend Chapter 60 of the Revised Statutes, 1923, "The Education Act".

(Passed the 15th day of March, A. D. 1926.)

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council, and Assembly as follows:

1. Section 123 of Chapter 60 of the Revised Statutes, 1923, "The Education Act", is amended by striking out the first line of said Section and substituting therefor the following: "Proceedings shall be instituted under".

2. Section 140 of said Chapter is repealed and the following substituted therefor:

140. No person other than the Board or the School Attendance Officer or some other person appointed by the Board in that behalf shall institute any proceeding for a contravention of any provision of this Part.

CHAPTER 27.

An Act to Amend Chapter 60, Revised Statutes, 1923, being "The Education Act".

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Assembly as follows:

An Act to Amend Chapter 64, Revised Statutes of
Nova Scotia, 1923, "The Agriculture Act".

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Assembly as follows:

1. Section 99 of Chapter 64, Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1923, is amended by striking out the words "The Provincial Secretary" in the first line thereof, and substituting therefor the words "The Minister of Natural Resources".

2. Section 114 of said Chapter 64 is amended by striking out the words "The Provincial Secretary" in the first line thereof, and substituting therefor the words "The Minister of Natural Resources".

CHAPTER 29.

An Act to Amend Chapter 66, Revised Statutes of
Nova Scotia, 1923, "Of the Encouragement

of Settlement on Farm Lands".

(Passed the 15th day of March, A. D. 1926.)

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Asse nbly, as follows:

1. Section 2 of Chapter 66, Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1923, is amended by striking out the words "Provincial Secretary or Deputy Provincial Secretary" in the tenth line thereof, and substituting therefor the words "Minister of Natural Resources or Deputy Minister of Natural Resources".

Sec. 11 amend- 2. Section 11 of said Chapter 66 is amended by striking out the words "Provincial Secretary" in the first line thereof, and substituting therefor the words 'Minister of Natural Resources or Deputy Minister of Natural Resources".

3. Said Chapter 66 is further amended by adding Section added. thereto the following section:

(1) The Minister of Natural Resources or any Minister may person deputed by him for that purpose, may enter occupied farms, upon or into any vacant or unoccupied farm land and negotiate for buildings thereon, to whomsoever belonging, and sale or lease. survey and appraise the same, and may negotiate on the basis of such appraisement with the owner or owners of such land and buildings for the sale or lease thereof, for the purpose of the encouragement of settlement thereon, or the extension of any existing industry in the Province, or the development of any new industry, provided, however, that before entering upon and into such land and buildings, the Minister shall give reasonable notice when practicable to the owner of such land and buildings or any person appearing to be in charge thereof.

(2) The Minister of Natural Resources, in case of Minister dispute, shall finally determine whether such land to determine. and buildings are vacant or unoccupied, within the meaning of this section, for the purpose of such survey and appraisement.

CHAPTER 30.

An Act to Amend Chapter 70, Revised Statutes of
Nova Scotia, 1923, "Of the Incorporation of
Farmers' Fruit, Produce and Ware-
house Associations".

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Assembly as follows:

88. (1), Sec. 14.

1. Section 14 of Chapter 70 of The Revised Clause added to Statutes, 1923, "Of the Incorporation of Farmers' Fruit, Produce and Warehouse Associations" is amended by adding to sub-section (1) thereof the following clause:

(e) changing the name of the company.

An Act to Amend Chapter 75 of The Revised Statutes, 1923, "The Public Highways Act".

(Passed the 15th day of March, A. D. 1926.)

Be it enacted by the Governor, Council and Assembly, as follows:

1. Clause (b) of Section 2 of Chapter 75 of the Revised Statutes, 1923, "The Public Highways Act", is repealed and the following substituted therefor:

(b) "Chief Engineer" means the Chief Engineer of the Department of Highways appointed under the provisions of this Chapter.

2. Clause (c) of Section 2 of the said Chapter is repealed.

3. Section 4 of the said Chapter is repealed.

4. Section 5 of the said Chapter is repealed and substituted. the following substituted therefor:

Appointment of 5. The Governor-in-Council may appoint a person to be Chief Engineer of the Department of Highways who shall be paid such salary as the Governorin-Council from time to time determines.

5. Section 6 of the said Chapter is repealed.

6. Section 7 of the said Chapter is repealed and the following substituted therefor:

7. The Minister shall have the supervision, management and control of the highways and roads and of all matters relating thereto, and shall perform such other duties as from time to time may be assigned to him by the Governor-in-Council.

7. Section 8 of the said Chapter is repealed and the following substituted therefor:
