men, accompanied the Infantry through the Bois de Rappes, near Cunel, for the purpose of wiring in the extreme northeast outposts. Due to strong resistance of the enemy he saw fit to throw his men in and help hold the captured ground. Later he personally made a reconnaisance in full view of the enemy machine gunners and snipers, for a desirable outpost location and led his men in the wiring. Also, on the night of November 3rd and 4th, 1918, he supervised the construction of one of the pontoon foot bridges over the canal near Brieulles. Thus, constantly under heavy gun fire, he showed exceptional ability in the handling of his men and in the utter disregard for danger and untiring efforts he set a splendid example and succeeded in completing the work which enabled the Infantry to later cross the canal and capture the commanding heights east of the Meuse.

Three sons of Margaret Pringle, of Wooster, served in the military service, Samuel, Paul and David. Samuel was a lieutenant, David enteerd the aviation department, and Paul was overseas with the 146th Inf.

Although but one man from Wayne county, Thomas Russell Snyder, perished at sea through the activity of enemy submarines, several Wayne county men were on torpedoed ships. Lieut. Ralph Wile and Earl Derr, whose homes were opposite each other on Nold Avenue, Wooster, were on transports that were torpedoed. Clayton Marthey of Maysville, and Ira Batdorf, of Wooster, were among the others.

Many soldiers in army camps saw theatrical performances because of the generosity of the home folks in providing Smileage tickets. These were sold in books costing $1, each book admitting a soldier to a number of performances. Paul Thayer, a horticulturist at the Ohio Experiment

Station, was chairman of this movement in Wayne county, and Wayne county people bought a great many of these books and sent them to men in the army.

Wayne county was not slow to take up the organization of Local Posts in the American Legion, an organization to which all men who served in the nation's military organizations, were declared to be eligible. An application for a chartrer for Wooster Post was made in August, 1919, and "Wooster Post, No. 68" was organized on Wednesday evening, September 3rd, at Memorial Hall, by the election of the following officers: Post Commander, F. C. Gerlach.

Post Vice Commander, F. C. Redick.

Post Treasurer, Frank Blough.

Post Historian, Harlen R. Hauenstein.
Post Adjutant, Ralph Wile.
