Babylonian scribes; yet we thank God for this timely HEATHEN witness to the accuracy of His own Word, and also to its chronology. And if our readers ask why the frontispiece of our volume should be this year our own antique CORONATION CHAIR―and "what can that have to do with the Bible?"-we must refer them to an article called "Our Staff of Purpose" (p. 147), and to successive papers, from January to July, concerning longhidden pages of European history; and of that Culdean (supposed early Chaldean)—and if so Israelitish-missionary influence which touched the Celts of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, apart from any Latin influences bearing on the South of England, and before the times of Patrick or Columba. These caused Ireland to be looked upon for centuries as "the missionary Isle," and this Celtic Church went forth thence to evangelize in Switzerland, Burgundy, Champagne, and Brittany, by its presbyters and bishops, for ages before it was driven to submit to the superstitious rule of Rome. See Articles pp. 181 and 219. That old Culdean, or Celtic, Church taught of Paul in his epistle to the Galatians, and by Peter (never really Rome's apostle) in his 1st epistle, dated from Babylon, conveys the salutations of a Chaldean Christian Church (in all likelihood called to Christ on the day of Pentecost) to those strangers and pilgrims "elected together with them," who were travelling through Asia Minor as 66 a royal priesthood—a purchased people" (see margin), and who are charged "to have their conversation honest among the Gentiles." The old Celtic Stone in our Coronation Chair may have yet unproved relations with this ancient Celtic Church, and with the lost Israel, to whom the Tablets above mentioned witness as carried captive to Chaldea. If this link is yet missing, it is worth searching for. Meanwhile our Royal Throne-seat recalls vividly to our minds in these "perilous times," when Rome is making her last efforts to regain England, how an Act of Parliament, passed in 1689 (see p. 23), bars the succession to the English throne, as that of a Protestant kingdom, to every Popish prince, and even to every king or queen who is married to a Papist-diverting the succession in consequence to our own Queen Victoria's ancestors of the House of Brunswick.
