FOR VICE-PRESIDENT. MEETING OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION, The Democratic National Convention met at Chicago on June 21. 1892. and was opened by Calvin S. Brice, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, William C. Owens. of Kentucky, was made temporary chairman, and Simon P. Sheerin, of Indiana, temporary secretary. At the second day's morning session. William L. Wilson, of West Virginia, was appointed permanent chairman and Mr. Sheerin permanent secretary. At the evening ses-ion Charles H. Jones. of Missouri, presented the platform, which Senator W. F. Vilas, of Wisconsin. read. Mr. Jones moved its adoption. Lawrence D. Neal, of Ohio. moved the substitution of the following tariff plank for that offered: "We denounce the Republican protection as a fraud, a robbery of the great majority of the American people for the benefit of the few. We declare it to be a fundamental principle of the Democratic party that the Federal Government has no constitutional Dower to impose and collect tariff duties, except for the purposes of revenue only, and we demand that the collection of such taxes shall be limited to the necessities of the Government. when honestly and economically administered." Mr. Jones, on behalf of the Committee on Resolutions, offered to accept Mr. Neal's amendment as an addition. The amendment was finally adopted as a substitute by a vote of 564 to 342. A motion by Mr. Patterson, of Colorado, to amend the coinage plank by inserting the word "free" in the sentence demanding the coinage of both gold and silver was defeated. When the order of nominations for the Presidency was called, Arkansas yielded to New-Jersey, and Governor Leon H. Abbett, of that State, nominated Grover Cleveland, of New-York. William C. DeWitt, of Brooklyn, nominated David B. Hill, of NewYork. John F. Duncombe, of Iowa, nominated Horace E. Boies, of Iowa, Henry Watterson, of Kentucky, seconding. Mr. Cleveland was nominated on the firs ballet, the vote standing Cleveland, 616; Hill. 112: Boies. 103: Campbell. 5: Gorman. 15: Carlisle. 2. Delegates present, 910: necessary to choice. 606; Cleveland's plurality, 504. On the third and last day Adlai E. Stevenson, of Illinois, was nominated for the Vice-Presidency.
