Material

Weatherproof covering shall consist of braids made from cotton yarn. The braids shall be closely and uniformly woven and all yarn shall be at least two-ply. Each braid shall be impregnated with a dense mineral pitch insoluble in water. The pitch shall be of such quality and applied in such a manner as to thoroughly saturate the fibre of the yarn. Each braid on conductors larger than No. 1 AWG shall have a minimum thickness of 3/64 inch. Each braid of No. 1 AWG and smaller shall have a minimum thickness of 1/32 inch. The exposed surface of the finished product shall present a hard and smooth finish.

Tests

A dry sample at least three feet in length with the ends sealed, when immersed for twenty-four hours in water, having a temperature of not less than 24° C (75° F.) shall show an absorption of moisture not in excess of two per cent of its dry weight. A sample four inches long suspended vertically, shall not drop compound when subjected to a temperature of 82° C. (180° F.) for fifteen minutes. After a sample has been maintained at a temperature of 7° C. (45° F.) for at least fifteen minutes the surface shall not break when bent through 360° around a cylinder of twice its own. outside diameter.

The quality of the materials used and the methods of manufacture shall be such as to insure for this paint the properties called for in these specifications. The manufacturer must make sure that all material and work is in accordance with the specifications before the paint is delivered.

The telephone company is to have the right to make such inspections and tests as it may desire of the materials and of the paint at any stage of the manufacture.

The inspector of the telephone company shall have the power to reject any material or paint which fails to meet the requirements of these specifications. Inspection shall not, however, relieve the manufacturer from the obligation of furnishing perfect material and sound reliable work. Any failure to satisfy the requirements of these specifications that may be discovered when the paint is delivered to the telephone company shall be corrected immediately, upon the requirement of the telephone company, notwithstanding that it may have been overlooked by the inspector. If the rewhen the paint is offered for final acceptance, not quirements of these specifications are not fulfilled only shall the telephone company have the right to reject the paint, but the expense of inspection and

test shall be borne by the manufacturer.

The paint called for under these specifications is intended to be ready for use without further addition of oil or thinners.

Paint

The paint shall contain only raw linseed oil, pigment, and an approved drier.

Oil

The oil used in the paint shall be pure raw linseed oil, free from cottonseed oil, fish oil, rosin oil, or other adulterants.

Driers

A small amount of a lead or other approved drier shall be added to the oil, in such proportions that the paint shall dry on poles in not less than 24 hours, nor more than 48 hours. The drier may be dissolved in benzine to assist in mixing it with the oil but the proportion of the benzine present in the mixed paint shall not exceed two per cent.

Pigment

The pigment shall form between thirty-three and forty per cent of the total weight of the paint. It shall be finely ground. At least ninety-nine per cent shall pass through a sieve having 10,000 meshes to the square inch and all the pigment shall pass through a sieve having 5,476 meshes to the square inch. The pigment shall contain no substance soluble in water.

Fading

A single thin coat of paint applied to a board. and exposed to direct sunlight for forty hours shall shown no perceptible fading or change of color.

Samples of oil (of about one pint in quantity) shall be taken before any admixture of pigment has occurred. Only oil which has thus been separately sampled for test shall be used in making paint under these specifications.

Specification for Solder Metal

Solder metal used for overhead line construction should conform to the tentative specifications of the American Society for Testing Materials B3219T, Class A, Grade 1. This specification provides for a mixture of fifty per cent pure lead and fifty per cent pure tin, having a melting point of 180° C. or 356° F., and complete liquation point of 213° C., 415.4° F.
