EXPRESS COMPANIES

United States Express Company.

Organized April 22, 1854.

This company is an unincorporated association existing by reason. of a contract between its members. It was not organized pursuant to the statutes of any state, but was organized in the city of New York.

This company operates in Ohio over the lines of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, the Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern Railroad Company, the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railway Company, the Cleveland, Southwestern & Columbus Railway Company (electric), the Dayton, Lebanon & Cincinnati Railroad and Terminal Company, the Detroit United Railways (electric), the Kanawha & Michigan Railway Company, the Lake Shore Electric Railway Company, the Lakeside and Marblehead Railroad Company, the Marietta, Columbus & Cleveland Railroad Company, the Ohio Electric Railway Company, the Pere Marquette Railroad Company, the Toledo & Ohio Central Railway Company and the Toledo & Western Railway Company (electric), and operates jointly with other express companies in the state of Ohio over the Dayton & Union Railroad Company and the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway Company.

This company has no capital stock, but the ownership of the company is divided into one hundred thousand shares, of a par value of $100.00 per share, all of which are issued and outstanding. These shares are held by 1,586 shareholders

This company has no bonded indebtedness.

The total mileage over which the company operates, both railroad and inland water, is 29,386.34 miles, of which 3.346.55 miles are in Ohio. The amount of gross revenue for the year ending June 30, 1908, for its entire business, including express and money order earnings, was $16,983,638.18, while its gross earnings in Ohio were $638,077.00.

The operating expenses for its entire business were $16,945,903.54, of which $551,494.50 is charged to the Ohio business, in addition to taxes amounting to $16,925.64.

The amount of net income after deducting operating expenses, fixed charges, etc., for its entire business was $37,734.64; the proportion of this net revenue apportioned to the intrastate earnings in Ohio, assuming that the net earnings on the intrastate business is the same proportion of the gross earnings as the net earnings of the entire system is to the gross earnings of the entire system, $141.72.

Adams Express Company.

Organized July 1, 1854, as a voluntary association.

This company operates in Ohio over the lines of the Ashland & Western Railway Company, the Columbus & Southern Railroad Company, Hocking Valley Railway Company, Ohio River & Columbus Railway Company, Ohio River & Western Railway Company, Pennsylvania Lines and the Pittsburgh, Lisbon & Western Railway Com. pany.

This company has no capital stock. Its property is represented by 120,000 interests or shares, held by 2,892 shareholders.

The total mileage operated by the company is 34,862 miles, of which 2,231 miles are in the state of Ohio.

The company has no kind of indebtedness outstanding.

The amount of gross revenue for the year ending June 30, 1908, for entire business, was $26,919,244.30, of which $491,389.00 represents the gross receipts for the state of Ohio.

The operating expenses for entire business were $27,040,208.91. Operating expenses for Ohio business were $471,656.26.

American Express Company.

Organized March 18, 1850, under the common law of the state of New York. This company is not a corporation, but a voluntary partnership or association of individuals organized under articles of agreement between its members.

The company was consolidated with the Merchants' Union Express Company in 1868, being similarly organized. This consolidation was effected under authority of the laws of the state of New York.

This company operates in Ohio over the lines of the Cincinnati Northern Railroad Company, the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Company, the Dayton & Union Railroad Company, the Hocking Valley Railway Company, the Michigan Central Railroad Company, the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Company, the Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company, the Northern Ohio Traction Company, the Lake Erie, Alliance & Wheeling Railway Company, the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway Company, the Detroit, Toledo & Milwaukee Railroad Company (now part of the L. S. & M. S. System). the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railway Company, and operates jointly with other express companies over the Dayton & Union Railroad Company, the Northern Ohio Traction Company and the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Company.
