The Productiveness of Cincinnati Geared-Feed Geared-Feed Millers

is thoroughly demonstrated by this one operation of finishing cast iron bearing surfaces 758 in. wide by 15-16 in. deep to gage.

The largest cutter in the gang is 41⁄2 in. diameter and 6 in. face and works at a cut ing speed of 47 feet. The roughing cut takes out about 3-32 in. all around to remove scale at a feed of .075 in. per turn of cutter, which is equivalent to a table travel of 3 in. per minute.

Don't you think it requires a powerful feed drive to pull a cut like that and an exceedingly rigid machine to stand such a strain ? Both these features are characteristic of Cincinnati Millers.

When the roughing cut is completed the outer support is swung clear of the arbor and the roughing cutters are replaced by a set for finishing, without disturbing the overhanging arm and braces, in less time than it would take to re-chuck the pieces.

The finishing cut removes about .010 in. all around at a cutting speed of 47 feet and a table travel of nearly 11⁄2 in. per minute.

These pieces are 7 in. long; the finished surface is of irregular outline 75% in. wide by 15-16 in. deep. Don't you think it would pay you to do some of your work on a "Cincinnati" Miller?

In the Beginning

The Hartness Automatic Die was designed for use on the Flat Turret Lathe-this might be called the "raison d'être" of the die-but while originally designed for the Jones & Lamson machine it is equally useful for any turret lathe where quick operation and accurate results are required.

The Flat Turret Lathe marked a new departure in lathe work.

Its advent into the machine world made it possible to perform operations on small machine parts four or five times quicker than had been possible to do the work on an engine lathe, with results that were actually better than ordinarily obtained.

The principle of lathe work used on the Flat Turret Lathe was complete in all particulars except that of thread cutting, and to fill this deficiency the Automatic Die was designed, thus making it feasible to cut accurate threads with great rapidity on a turret lathe.

The work produced by the Automatic Die compares favorably with the ordinary results in thread cutting obtained on the engine lathe. It is made in two sizes and turns all diameters up to 2 inches. Provided with right and left hand chasers for cutting U. S. Standard, V Standard, Whitworth or Metric Standard; also half V threads.

JRINDE

ts one continual grind!

FROM THE TIME the castings leave the foundry until they are boxed and ready for shipment, grinding enters into nearly every step of their manufacture. They are cleaned by grinding, fitted by grinding and finished by grinding. Not only this but the very machines which do grinding for others are themselves cleaned, fitted and finished by grinding. THERE WAS A TIME when

"The sound of the grinding was low because the grinders were few," but now it is the most universal process in the shop.

HAVE YOU SEEN the Gardner Grinder with spiral grooves the one with steel discs which never wear out, which never warp and are never out of balance?

THE DISC has a spiral groove cut into the solid metal into which is forced a sheet of emery cloth covered with glue, thus forming a spiral cutting edge. The composi tion on this emery cloth can be varied so as to adapt it to any class of work and further than this it can be duplicated exactly which emery wheel makers usually can not do. Thus the greatest degree of efficiency may be maintained.

SEND US SOME SAMPLES of your work and we will test them free of charge and tell you exactly what our grinder can do.

If we cannot save you something

we will tell you so.
